Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) Job Description
Position Summary: The Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) is responsible for providing comprehensive mental health care to patients across the lifespan. This includes assessing, diagnosing, and treating mental health disorders through therapeutic modalities, medication management, and patient education. The PMHNP works collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams to promote optimal mental health outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct comprehensive mental health assessments, including psychiatric interviews and history-taking.
Evaluate mental, emotional, and behavioral health conditions using diagnostic tools and criteria.
Develop individualized care plans tailored to patient needs.
Monitor patient progress, adjust treatments as needed, and ensure continuity of care.
Prescribe and manage psychiatric medications.
Educate patients on medication use, benefits, and potential side effects.
Monitor for adverse reactions and ensure safe medication practices.
Provide evidence-based psychotherapies, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), or supportive counseling.
Facilitate group or family therapy sessions when appropriate.
Work closely with psychiatrists, primary care providers, psychologists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals.
Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and case reviews.
Promote mental health literacy and destigmatization of mental illness.
Educate patients and families about conditions, treatment options, and coping strategies.
Maintain accurate and timely medical records in compliance with legal, regulatory, and institutional standards.
Adhere to state and federal laws governing practice, including HIPAA and prescribing regulations.
Qualifications:
Education: Master’s or Doctoral degree in Nursing (MSN or DNP) with a focus on Psychiatric-Mental Health.
Licensure: Active RN and APRN licenses. PMHNP certification through the ANCC.
Experience: Preferably 1-2 years of clinical experience in psychiatry or mental health.
Skills:
Expertise in psychopharmacology and psychotherapy.
Strong diagnostic and critical thinking skills.
Effective communication and empathy.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team.
Work Environment:
Inpatient psychiatric units, outpatient clinics, private practices, telehealth settings, correctional facilities, or schools.
