    Job Summary:

    Public Safety Officers foster and maintain a safe and secure environment for its students, faculty, staff, and visitors across all St. John’s University campuses and branch properties. Public Safety Officers report directly to Supervisors; they do not manage a staff.

    Essential Functions:

    • Responsible for responding to all calls for assistance which include crimes in progress, past crimes, vehicle accidents , personnel injuries, medical and aided cases, fires, smoke, burglar and duress alarms and render aid as required.
    • Must render first aid, CPR and utilize Automated External Defibrillator.
    • Operate a patrol vehicle in a safe and proficient manner in areas of high pedestrian traffic.
    • Conduct field investigations concerning violations of law, violations of University policy and violations of the student code of conduct reported to them. Gather and compile information, and prepare reports.
    • Engage with the various campus community departments checking on needs or security concerns.
    • Patrol assigned posts or areas either on foot, bicycle, scooter, or in a motor patrol vehicle.
    • Actively participate in crime prevention and community policing activities.
    • Be mindful of current crime trends on and around the campus grounds and take appropriate action to deter such activity.
    • Direct pedestrian and vehicle traffic and enforce campus parking regulations.
    • Perform general security services, including locking and unlocking buildings, rooms, laboratories and roadway gates.
    • Assist students who require escorts in and around the campus property due to injury or accessability issues.
    • Assist motorists who are having battery, tire or door lock problems.
    • Perform campus access control in security kiosks (booth) by documenting vehicle license plates and issueing parking permits.
    • Perform related duties, as assigned.

    Competencies:

    Candidates for this position must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.

    They must be customer service oriented and willing to take the extra step to assist people in need.

    Must be certified in administering CPR or First Aid, as needed, and must be proficient in the use of an Automatic External Defibrillator.

    Work Environment:

    Public Safety Officers are responsible to respond to routine and emergency calls for service in and around the University, many of which are unique to a campus environment, and take action, as necessary.

    This position operates in a professional office environment as well as outdoors (as required). This position is required to use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, etc.

    Physical Demands:

    • Ability to patrol on foot, bicycle, scooter, or in radio motor patrol vehicle
    • Ability to climb multiple flights of stairs to conduct verticals
    • Ability to stand or sit for 4-8 hours
    • Ability to occasionally lift or move up to 30-50 pounds
    • Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing
    • Ability to operate departmental equipment

    Environmental Conditions:

    Must work during emergencies like a fire with smoke conditions, gas leaks, construction within the campus.

    Must be able to perform duties outdoors during inclement weather conditions.

    Must be able to work during emergencies, including pandemics, active shooter, etc.

    Expected Hours of Work:

    Open shifts include:

    • 3:00pm to 11:00pm
    • 11:00pm to 7:00am

    Days off will be either:

    • Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and every other Wednesday
    • Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and every other Wednesday

    Travel

    Public Safety Officers may be asked to work at any of our branch campuses within the US only.

    Required Education and Experience:

    • Prefer a minimum of 5 years security experience.
    • New York State Fire Guard License, to be obtained within six months of employment; the license must be renewed by the Officer every two years and an updated copy given to the Executive Director.
    • Candidate must hold a High School diploma or equivalent; college or university degrees preferred.
    • Candidate must possess and maintain a current New York Sate Security guard license as well as possess and maintain a current and clean motor vehicle operator’s license.
    • Candidate must be able to perform their responsibilities while wearing an N-95 respirator mask as mandated by OSHA regulations.
    • Candidates must pass a comprehensive background investigation.
    • Candidates must be able to work on all shifts, during various hours, including weekends and holidays.

    Preferred Education and Experience:

    • Candidate must hold a High School diploma or equivalent; college or university degrees preferred.

    Additional Eligibility Qualifications

    • Candidate must hold a High School diploma or equivalent; college or university degrees preferred.
    • Candidate must possess and maintain a current New York Sate Security guard license as well as possess and maintain a current and clean motor vehicle operator’s license.
    • Candidate must possess and maintain a City of New York, Fire Department Certificate of Fitness, Citywide Fireguard for Impairment (F-01). Candidates who do not possess this certificate at time of hire must obtain the certificate within ninety (90) days of employment.

    • Officers, on occasion, will be required to work operational and special event overtime assignments.
    • Officers could be asked to shift hours for a period of time to meet the minum requirements for the department.
    • During emergency situations, such as snow storms, Officers may be required to stay past their assigned tour/hours.

    In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the hourly salary for this position is $24.00/hr.
