    Large Equipment Operator I

    Salary level: Start: $15.05 Max Rate: $24.21 (R6)

    FLSA Status: Non-Exempt - Hourly

    SUMMARY

    Under general supervision, this individual operates heavy construction type equipment or passenger buses.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

    • Responsible for the operation and preventative maintenance of heavy duty garbage trucks (Trash trucks), city passenger buses, or heavy construction type equipment including trash loader, sweeper, slope mower, large front end loader, rear end loader, water truck, 12 yard dump truck, trencher backhoe, port-a-patcher , rod truck and rod machine.
    • Provide routine maintenance on assigned equipment and report serious mechanical difficulties for repair.
    • Ability to adjust equipment as needed for specialized operations.
    • May drive City passenger bus over a predetermined City route according to time schedule and pick up and discharge passengers at assigned stops. Also, offer assistance to elderly and handicapped passengers while picking up and discharging.
    • Provide information on City bus routes, schedules, transfer points, and street locations. Complete daily work reports and submit to supervisor.
    • May lead small crews of General Maintenance Workers.
    • Perform other assigned duties.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

    This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Good knowledge of City geography and ability to follow directions accurately on designated or assigned routes.
    • Good knowledge of operating procedures and maintenance of machinery to be operated.

    • Regular prompt attendance is an essential function to this position.
    • The ability to get along and promote a harmonious working environment with vendors, supervisors, citizens, and co-workers is an essential function of this position.

    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

    High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. One to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    LANGUAGE SKILLS

    Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

    Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

    REASONING ABILITY

    Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

    Must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (C.D.L.) with appropriate endorsement is required.

    Bus Operators must possess Passenger and Air Brake endorsement.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand and walk. The employee is occasionally required to taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, outside weather conditions, and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and risk of electrical shock.

    The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
