Job title: Pump Mechanic Assistant
General:
Under general supervision, performs skilled work in the maintenance and repair of the city's sewage pumps and equipment. Reports to the Pump Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor.
Essential Job Functions:
Monitors performance of pumps and motors associated with the city's sewage pump station; performs preventative maintenance such as lubricating and adjusting equipment as scheduled; maintains records of inspections and maintenance activities; and monitoring performance of pumps and motors at city's sewage pump station and rebuilding water pumps, sewage pumps and related equipment.
Overhauls and repairs pumps, valves, fittings, motors and other electrical and mechanical equipment, as necessary; runs new and repairs old pipes for pumps; inspects, adjusts and/or replaces units and parts, as necessary; performs custodial duties in pump station, including sweeping, painting; assists in the performance of building repairs, and including roof repairs; and replaces vent fans, drain pipes, and basin boards.
Operates pumps and motors, as well as electrical and electronic controls, telemetry equipment and hydraulic systems; advises supervisor of parts and equipment necessary to perform preventive maintenance and/or repair; responds to after-hours calls to repair or alleviate sewage stoppages, pump failures, customer complaints and inquiries in person and via telephone.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Maintenance — Comprehensive knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment used in the repair of structures, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic systems and process equipment to include procedures for diagnosing malfunctions as well as the operation of assigned vehicles or equipment.
Safety Thorough knowledge of current and accepted occupational safety and health practices and principles to include federal and state safety regulations.
Interpersonal Relationships/Customer Service — Develops and maintains cooperative and professional relationships with employees and the public.
Computer Skills - Utilizes a personal computer with word processing, spreadsheet, and related software to effectively complete a variety of administrative tasks with reasonable speed and accuracy.
Time Management - Plans and organizes daily work routine. Estimates expected time of completion of elements of work and establishes a personal schedule accordingly. Implements work activities in accordance with priorities and estimated schedules.
Mechanical/Structural Repair -- Utilizes a variety of shop tools and equipment to perform
Communication — Excellent ability to communicate complex ideas and proposals effectively so others will understand to include preparation of reports and work orders. Ability to handle a variety of issues with tact and diplomacy and in a confidential manner the most complex and detailed repair work of equipment.
Mathematics — Ability to perform basic arithmetic, algebraic, and statistical applications.
Education, experience and Special Requirements:
High school and 1 to 2 years of related mechanical experience in mechanical or electrical repair work; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required: Valid Driver’s License
Physical Requirements
Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment and machinery, computer, drill press, truck, pumps, motors, mechanical and plumbing tools, etc. Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 75 pounds of force frequently, and/or 50 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are those for Heavy Work.
Data Conception - Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.
Interpersonal Communication - Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving instructions, assignments or directions from superiors.
Language Ability. - Requires the ability to read a variety of work orders, confined spaces report, time sheets, etc. Requires the ability to prepare oral training reports, etc., using prescribed formats and conforming to alt rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style. Requires the ability to speak with poise, voice control and confidence.
Motor Coordination - Requires the ability coordinate to hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using office and pump equipment.
Color Discrimination
Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.
