Veteran criminal justice advocate Robert Rooks leads the organization as CEO.2022 Internship Program OverviewREFORM is seeking candidates for our 2022 summer internship program. The ideal candidate is passionate about criminal justice reform, a self-starter, and eager to learn in a team environment. People who have been directly impacted by or involved with the criminal justice system are encouraged to apply. The internship is an opportunity to grow our interns’ knowledge of the power of storytelling and the fight to reform the justice system.This is a non-exempt position and students will receive an hourly rate for twenty hours per week, exposure to leaders in this space and company initiatives, and the opportunity to build transferable business skills. Projects are designed to build knowledge, skills, and professional experience.Internships will start the week of June 13 (with some limited flexibility to start later depending on individual intern’s academic calendar) and last up to nine weeks. Interns will work and participate in internship activities from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Optional, unpaid social programming may take place on some Thursday afternoons after 2:00pm.REFORM is seeking up to twenty (20) interns in seven (7) departments (Policy, Research and Implementation, Communications, Community Projects, Membership and Organizing, Office of the CEO and Information Technology) to work on ten (10) projects as set forth below. Please specify in your application which project(s) interest you. Note that while some projects are open to students seeking a bachelor/graduate degree at an accredited institution and REFORM will also consider rising high school seniors and May 2021 graduates, some positions have special requirementsProject #1– Policy Intern- One positionThe Policy Intern will provide direct support to the Senior Policy Manager. The Policy Intern will be responsible for drafting memorandum, researching policy in our 2023 states, and supporting executive assistant and project management functions for the policy team.Tasks Will IncludeIdentification and analysis of primary and secondary state and local policy resourcesDrafting policy memorandum regarding recent supervision research, legislative trends, relevant bills, etc.Drafting state-specific collateral, including letters of support, 1-pagers, and talking points, as appropriateNote-taking during key policy meetings and other administrative functionsOther tasks as identified by the Senior Policy Manager.The Policy Intern will contribute to the Advocacy Team and the overall mission of REFORM by increasing our understanding of federal, state, and local policies and preparing the policy team to enact change alongside leaders and organizations that share and align with our priorities.Qualifications For The Intern, Policy, IncludeRequired: Experience with policy analysis and writing and a demonstrated interest in learning how to read and interpret statutesRequired: Strong writerRequired: Ability to work independently and communicate well with a remote managerRequired: Willing to solicit, accept, and incorporate feedbackPreferred: Law, MPP, or MPA studentPreferred: Demonstrated understanding of economics and modern research methodsProject #2: Research and Implementation Intern– Up to two positionsDescription: The interns will be responsible for conducting research in support of a few different projects within the Department. Specifically the intern will be researching 1)the implementation of policies similar to those that REFORM is pursuing for a report on the challenges and opportunities associated with implementing our policies (e.g. earned credits, probation caps, etc); 2) background research to support a report we are writing on the relationship between poverty and parole/probation; and 3) background research for a report we will be writing on the various models states and counties use to finance parole and probation departments.Tasks Will IncludeSpeaking with state and local officials to gather information for each project (done alongside R&I staff)Conducting literature reviews and targeted research to understand the existing knowledge base related to each topicWriting summaries and producing other content to share the learnings from researchOther tasks as assignedThe intern will contribute to the production of multiple reports that the Research and Implementation team is working on, these reports will inform REFORM's work and strategy as well as provide thought leadership to the justice reform field broadly.QualificationsStrong research skills, especially ability to read and summarize existing research in concise waysStrong writing skills would be a plusAble to manage multi-step projects that require organization and a structured approachCurious and inquisitiveMust be very comfortable with conducting web based research, ideally comfortable with G SuiteProject #3: Story Development Intern- One positionSpecific Tasks May IncludeThe storytelling project intern will provide direct support to the Legal Director and Legal Department Program Associate with the collection, vetting, and development of stories related to REFORM’s policy goals.Interviewing storytellers Upkeep story tracking spreadsheet Review story submission surveysAssist in the development of story collecting processesAttend and take meeting minutes related to story collecting and development Special Qualifications For The Storytelling Project Intern IncludeRequired: Strong reading and writing skillsRequired: An interest in storytelling by individuals impacted by the legal system Required: Collaborative and self-motivated Preferred: Experience with the justice system, personally or through a loved onePreferred: Proficient in Google Suite Project #4–Intern, Social Media Content Creator- Up to two positionsThe Intern,Tik Tok Content Creator, will provide direct support to the Digital Director and social media team.The Intern,Tik Tok Content Creator, will be responsible for creating entertaining and educational content that align with REFORM's mission and supporting the Director in researching trends and writing scripts for content creation.Tasks Will IncludeResearching latest tik tok trends and writing scripts relevant to our workIdentifying other content creators for relationship buildingOther tasks as identified by the Director.The Intern,Tik Tok Content Creator, will contribute to the Digital Communications Team and overall mission of REFORM by increasing our social media engagement and following.QualificationsSpecial Qualifications for the Intern,Tik Tok Content Creator:Required: Strong Internet navigation skills, understanding of news research and ability to independently recognize trendsPreferred: Proficient on Google SuiteStrong Tik Tok followingUnderstanding of content creator tools like capcut, adobe suite etc.Project #5–Intern, External and Internal Communications- One positionThe Intern will support the Communications team with a focus on external and internal communications. The position will report to the Director of Executive Communications.Tasks Will Include Drafting content including talking points, newsletters, scripts, fact sheets, briefing memos, and strategic plans. Helping to manage the organization’s editorial calendar and brainstorming editorial opportunities. Developing pitches for media. Supporting the organization's internal communications. Thisposition will report to the Chief Communications Officer.Tasks Will Include Researching facts, trends and storylines to push back on rising crime rate narrative Rapid response research and tactics. Exploring storylines for a new partnership with Now This. Other tasks as identified by the Chief Communications Officer.Qualifications Exceptional writing, research, fact-checking and proofreading skills Interest in narrative change and media partnership workStrong interest in trends and innovation in communicationsProject #7– Court Watch (Cross functional, led by Department of Community Projects)- Up to three positionsThe Court Watch App is a new project launching at REFORM Alliance that invites the public to get involved in probation, parole and federal supervision court hearings through data and story collection. By increasing transparency in America’s court rooms, we believe that we can foster a justice system that is more fair, accountable and restorative.The Court Watch App is the first of its kind to focus on supervision law in the U.S., and we’re excited to be rolling it out in three phases over the course of the next year: I) pilot with grassroots partner organizations, II) soft launch with universities and law schools, and III) launch the App to the general public.
