REMSA Inc. www.remsainc.com is seeking qualified Marine Mammal/Protected Species Observers (MMO/PSO) who are unconditionally NMFS certified to perform Independent Contract work (on a hopper dredge), near a marine construction project in New Jersey.
JOB DESCRIPTION: (INDEPENDENT CONTRACT POSITION-MMO/PSO OBSERVER)
MMO/PSO will conduct observations and mitigation measures at the Ambrose Channel for no more than 12 hours a day. MMO/PSO will maintain a watch for endangered species/ marine mammals in all impact zones of the project operation. If you are not unconditionally NMFS certified, please do not apply.
This job includes, but is not limited to the following:
Identify marine animals to species.
Record sightings, distance, and behavior of marine species.
Maintain, organize, and update logs.
Utilize optical equipment to assess marine mammals' distance, species, and behavior.
Follow and implement all protocols as outlined in the Marine Mammal Monitoring Plan.
Monitor and record environmental data.
Prepare and submit daily, weekly, and monthly forms and reports.
Proactively communicate with team members and construction personnel via radio.
Proactively communicate with on-site project personnel to initiate project shutdowns when necessary.
Report interactions with endangered/threatened species to construction personnel, the Company, and governmental agencies as instructed.
Follow boat safety protocols.
Clean the work area daily.
REQUIREMENTS:
Must be a U.S. citizen or authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship or restrictions.
Must have an "unconditionally" approved Endangered/Protected Species Certification from the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS).
Have a valid Transportation Worker's Identification Card (TWIC)
Must have the required safety & work equipment (Binoculars, Phone, laptop/iPad or similar computer device, steel toe boots, hard hat, etc.)
MMO/PSO must be prepared to work shifts during inclement weather conditions.
Education: Degree (Associate or higher) in Marine Science, Biology, Ecology, Zoology, or related field.
Experience and skills:
Prior marine mammal observation experience and training courses.
Knowledge of the Marine Mammal Protection Act and Endangered Species Act.
Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
Ability to follow safety protocols and technical instructions as required.
Excellent communication (orally, by radio, and face to face) and writing skills.
Experience and or training in construction operations.
Experience and ability to conduct field observations and data collection.
Pay Rates: Based on qualifications and experience (Negotiable).
Lodging and food- provided onboard vessel.
