Job Title: Registered Nurse (RN) – Psychiatric
Department: Behavioral Health/Psychiatric Unit Reports To: Nurse Manager/Director of Behavioral Health Services
Job Summary:
The RN – Psychiatric is responsible for providing direct patient care to individuals with mental health conditions, emotional disturbances, or substance abuse issues. The role includes assessing patient needs, developing and implementing care plans, and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to support patient recovery and well-being.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients’ mental, emotional, and physical health.
Monitor and document patient behavior, mood changes, and response to treatment.
Administer medications as prescribed, ensuring proper dosage and monitoring for side effects.
Develop individualized care plans in collaboration with psychiatrists and other healthcare professionals.
Support therapeutic interventions, including crisis intervention, de-escalation techniques, and patient education.
Provide emotional support and guidance to patients and their families.
Maintain a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors by adhering to safety protocols and policies.
Observe and document any changes in patient condition, ensuring immediate action in emergencies.
Implement and monitor restraints or seclusion when necessary, following legal and ethical guidelines.
Work closely with psychiatrists, social workers, therapists, and other team members to coordinate patient care.
Participate in treatment team meetings to discuss patient progress and adjust care plans as needed.
Educate patients and families about mental health conditions, coping strategies, and available resources.
Advocate for patients’ rights and ensure confidentiality (HIPAA compliance).
Maintain accurate and timely medical records, including assessments, treatments, and patient progress notes.
Qualifications:
Education: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN preferred).
Licensure: Current RN license in the state of practice.
Certifications: BLS required; Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing Certification (PMH-BC) preferred.
Experience: 1-2 years of experience in mental health or psychiatric nursing preferred.
Skills and Competencies:
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to build rapport with patients and families.
Ability to remain calm under pressure and manage crisis situations effectively.
Knowledge of psychiatric medications, therapies, and de-escalation techniques.
Empathy, patience, and a non-judgmental attitude.
Work Environment:
Requires interaction with patients experiencing severe mental health crises, which may include unpredictable behaviors.
Work may involve standing for extended periods and occasional physical intervention.
Exposure to potentially stressful and emotionally charged situations.
This is 5 days a weak position. MUST TAKE CALL 1 day a week and one weekend.
