  • Responsibilities

    Hours: Monday thru Friday between 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., with an unpaid 30-minute lunch break. Excluding Federal holidays.

    1. Performs a broad range of therapeutic measures such as care for patients with varying health problems, i.e., chronic diseases, comorbidities, chronic pain, wound management, patient education, end of life care, interventions for acute care needs. Implements established protocols and standing orders for handling inmate complaints during sick call and initiates emergency care as needed according to institution policy.

    2. Develops a nursing assessment for each patient, to include planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care. May assess and identify high risk symptoms/behaviors in patients, to include suicidal risk, homicidal risk and risk for verbal and/or physical abuse. Completes nutritional screening as part of the assessment and refers patient to a dietitian for a nutritional assessment if necessary. Incumbent monitors, evaluates and revises the plan of care as needed. Incumbent is proactive in monitoring and achieving patient safety goals. Ongoing responsibilities for hand-off communication and medication reconciliation. Provides valuable input to the healthcare team regarding the discharge planning needs of a patient. Delegates and coordinates care based on assessments and competency level of subordinates.

    3. Communicates with co-workers reporting patient care needs and clinical issues. Serves as an integral member of Interdisciplinary and Unit Team Meetings.

    4. Duties include managing patient flow and triage, responding to institution emergencies with mid-level practitioner or physician back up, coordinating the workload/duties of the LPN/LVN, screening new arrivals, assessing inmates returning from consultant visits or hospitalizations, and providing patient education.

    5. In providing nursing care, adheres to infection control policies and procedures. Administers treatment and procedures with attention to accuracy, patient safety and comfort. Medications are administered as prescribed and documented in accordance with BOP and institution policy and procedure. Must maintain an accurate inventory of all needles, syringes, and controlled substances. 6. Must be able to assess a patient’s condition on an on-going basis and provide appropriate intervention, as well as refer patients to the appropriate medical practitioner. Identifies changes in their condition and takes appropriate action. Evaluates the effectiveness of interventions, monitors and documents progress toward identified goals, and reports information to the inter-disciplinary team for use in re-evaluating the plan of care.

    7. Interviews patients to obtain health history and records/ documents findings of patient care activities on appropriate records. Must complete written or electronic medical record documentation in an accurate, well-organized, legible and timely manner.

    8. Competently utilizes specialized monitoring equipment including but not limited to EKG machines, blood pressure machines, cardiac monitors, traction equipment, glucometers, defibrillators, IV infusion pumps, etc.

    9. May have responsibility for reviewing laboratory data and facilitating review of the results with the Medical Officer. Notifies the Medical Officer when panic laboratory values are received.

    10. Communicates critical information to his/her supervisor or to staff at the local hospital.

    11. Maintains patient’s privacy and confidentiality. Performs nursing care in a manner which demonstrates respect for a patient’s dignity, personal preference, or culture. Utilizes evidence based medicine to promote a healthful environment and reduce the incidence of communicable diseases within the correctional setting.

    12. Maintain daily sick call list/call out.

    Requirements:

    1. Applicants must have/provide CPR/BLS license

    2. Must provide diplomas and transcripts

    3. Possess a current and valid RN license/certificate from a United States jurisdiction.
