Position Philosophy :
The Store Manager is responsible for overseeing the complete day-to-day operations of Nelson’s Ace Hardware, with a focus on promoting core values, maximizing sales, controlling costs, and ensuring a positive customer experience.
The Store Manager is expected to foster team development, support exceptional customer service, and work closely with the Owner to achieve the company’s vision.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
Sales & Operations :
Manage daily store operations and monitor performance through MOD responsibilities.
Conduct store walks with management to identify and resolve issues promptly.
Ensure best practice procedures are followed, including daily task management
Work with the Inventory Manager to maintain an inventory accuracy level of 85% or higher.
Coordinate and supervise staff to achieve monthly sales goals and follow company procedures.
Delegate tasks to meet merchandising standards and ensure optimal product displays.
Oversee quarterly performance reviews and feedback processes.
Ensure timely completion of merchandise plans, seasonal flips, and store calendar updates.
Handle staff scheduling, hiring, and disciplinary actions in collaboration with the Owner.
Culture Awareness :
Uphold core values in communication and daily interactions with employees, customers, and vendors.
Customer Service :
Promote customer service as the top priority by coaching staff and modeling exceptional service.
Regularly teach and reinforce Every Customer Every Time through store meetings and huddles.
Resolve customer complaints within 48 hours.
Review Mystery Shops monthly to improve performance and meet goals.
Budgets and Payroll :
Monitor payroll monthly and ensure adherence to budgets.
Control overtime hours to stay within budget.
Inventory Control :
Collaborate with the Inventory Manager to reduce shrinkage, maintain stock levels, and ensure reporting accuracy.
Provide feedback on product placement and inventory needs.
Communications :
Keep staff informed about store plans, policies, and procedures.
Provide regular feedback and follow up on delegated tasks.
Coaching and Training :
Identify training needs for staff and coordinate with the Owner for monthly training.
Establish growth goals for staff and provide feedback on performance.
Conduct store meetings and huddles to communicate goals and coach staff.
Participate in and initiate recognition programs to build a positive store culture.
Safety Compliance and Housekeeping :
Maintain high standards of cleanliness throughout the store.
Enforce safety policies and serve as a safety role model.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
Strong prioritization and management skills.
Excellent communication, both written and oral, across all levels of the organization.
Ability to engage in relationship-building with employees and customers.
Strong analytical, organizational, and project management skills.
Technical proficiency in basic computer programs (Word, Excel, Google Docs).
Strong attention to detail, follow-up, and the ability to handle multiple tasks.
Leadership and motivational skills to foster a positive culture and role-model behavior.
Strong proficiency with web-based programs and ability to adapt to new technology.
Additional Requirements :
High school degree required; some college preferred.
3-5 years of retail management experience.
Knowledge of hardware products and willingness to learn.
Ability to build and maintain relationships with staff, vendors, and community members.
Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Physical Demands :
Moderate physical activity, including climbing, stooping, kneeling, and lifting up to 30 lbs. regularly and occasionally up to 50 lbs. with assistance.
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
