The Exhibit Builder, in collaboration with Roto's interdisciplinary team of design professionals, works as a contributing member of the fabrication team in building interactive exhibits, interpretive displays, themed environments and structures from shop/construction drawings and specifications based on existing designs.
Our Experienced Builder will be able to support our team in planning, designing, and co-creating custom interactive exhibits, play spaces and immersive experiences for museums, science centers, children’s museums, zoos, aquariums, and similar destinations. The scale and scopes of work vary and may span one or more phases of the design process, from initial master planning stages through detail design. Successful candidates have solid knowledge of public visitor behavior, 3D visual communication, fabrication methods and the execution of exceptional built environments.
As an Exhibit Builder, you will:
Provide fabrication, assembly and finish carpentry support for exhibits, displays, scenic facades and graphic signs using both common and unusual materials as required to satisfy the demands of the project.
Operate standard shop tools and various hand power tools required in the fabrication and assembly of final products.
Install exhibit structures and devices into final exhibition spaces both inside the shop and at client locations as required.
Build scaled models of exhibit pieces and spaces for evaluation using wood, plastics, foam core or similar modeling products.
Provide quality service to internal staff and external clients, vendors, and subcontractors.
Support Roto operations through participation in meetings and team functions as appropriate.
Prep, and finish structures and components with a variety of materials and techniques.
Serve as an example to other Roto team members in matters of appearance, attitude and performance.
Follow all Safety Policies and maintain OSHA compliance through work practice, maintaining records and writing reports as required.
Qualifications, Education, Experience, Skills, and Abilities:
Minimum 5 years’ experience and/or related training in a cabinet shop or similar fabrication, construction, mechanical, or industrial technology position.
Must demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain positive and collaborative working relationships.
5+ years of cabinet making and fine carpentry skills of cutting, joining and preparing wood, plywood and various plastic materials.
Inventive spirit, initiative to work alone without direct supervision, and personal responsibility for timely completion of assigned tasks.
Ability to work on many projects simultaneously.
Mechanical ability to integrate various electromechanical devices and apparatus into exhibit casework and structures.
High level of skill with hand tools, power tools, various saws, routers, and drills.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Physical Requirements:
Extended work hours may be required.
Ability to lift and move heavy objects (up to 100 lbs.) and work from lifts, ladders and high platforms.
Must be able to work in shop conditions which may include changing temperatures and conditions.
Ability to verbally communicate with team members and clients.
Must be able to lift, bend, twist, squat, and stand for prolonged periods of time (upwards of 8+ hours).
Requires the physical dexterity to build, prototype, and install exhibits.
Ability to travel domestically and internationally, as required.
