    STARTING SALARY: $290.00 per week  

    LOCATION: Uwharrie National Forest, North Carolina   

    TERM:  

    Session 1: June 14 - July 2, 2021

    Session 2: July 12 - July 30, 2021

    STATUS: Full Time, Exempt, Seasonal

    CONSERVATION CORPS NORTH CAROLINA:  

      

    The mission of the Conservation Corps North Carolina (CCNC) is to empower young adults through meaningful outdoor work that benefits North Carolina’s land and water and creates healthy communities.     

      

    CCNC is a program of Conservation Legacy. CCNC partners with Appalachian Conservation Corps, Conservation Trust for North Carolina (CTNC), and North Carolina public land managers to create a safe and effective program that benefits North Carolina’s communities and public lands.  

      

    CCNC engages motivated young adults to complete challenging and impactful conservation service projects in North Carolina. Projects may include trail construction & maintenance, habitat improvement, hazard fuel reduction, and ecological restoration. Participants may also complete technical and/or specialized project work (i.e. disaster recovery) depending on project partner needs.  

      

    SUMMARY:  

      

    This is an exciting opportunity to work with CCNC in conjunction with the Uwharrie National Forest. Participants will serve on a CCNC youth crew that consists of 4 - 6 members under the guidance, facilitation, and supervision of Crew Leaders and CCNC Staff. The crew will complete hands-on conservation service projects in the field accompanied by educational, programmed activities. Members are encouraged to have their own personal gear and equipment (tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, etc) though it is not required. Loaned equipment may be available for the season. Food is provided for the entirety of the program.  

      

    The crew will have the opportunity to understand the value of hard work, the contributions their work will make to public lands, and the need to focus on safety and excellence in all aspects of the project.  

      

    Crew members are encouraged to only participate in one session, but exceptions may be made based on position availability.  

      

    ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND FUNCTIONS:  

      

    Meet expectations as a crew member; perform work with an unwavering commitment to safety in every aspect of the crew’s work; perform heavy manual labor related to environmental conservation and restoration projects; work long days outdoors in all types of weather; apply new environmental conservation and restoration knowledge and outdoor living skills to all outdoor settings and work projects; actively participate in environmental education activities; support the creation of a positive team environment that nurtures personal growth; practice appropriate safety procedures in all tasks assigned; use, maintain and repair hand and power tools as necessary.  

      

    • PARTICIPANT ESSENTIAL ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

       

    Essential eligibility requirements for the program must be met. If you are unable to meet certain requirements, we may be able to assist you with some modification unless it alters the fundamental nature of the program, compromises the health and safety of participants or staff, or places an undue financial or administrative burden on the organization. These requirements are written the same for all positions and therefore may not apply directly to your particular position.   

      

    • PARTICIPATION AND EXPEDITION BEHAVIOR:  

    • Work effectively as a member of a team despite potentially stressful and difficult conditions. This may require problem solving on an interpersonal or group level as well as a willingness to accept differences.  

    • Contribute to a safe learning environment; no harassment of others for any reason.  

    • Willingness and ability to complete all aspects of the program including conservation projects, education, training and national service. Members must commit to participating in all crew/team activities, including service days in local communities where applicable.  

    • Effectively communicate ideas and concerns as they arise directly to supervisors, colleagues and organization staff.  

    • Have the cognitive ability to learn necessary skills and apply them to effectively carry out the service work requirements  

    • Appropriately represent the Program to the public and project partners at all times.  

    • SAFETY AND JUDGMENT:  

    • Effectively communicate danger to others in the form of either a warning of danger others may be encountering or a notification of personal distress, injury or need for assistance. You must be able to do so at a distance of up to 50 meters and in conditions with limited visibility or loud background noise such as darkness or high winds.  

    • Effectively perceive, understand and follow directions by others so that you will be able to successfully execute appropriate and perhaps unfamiliar techniques to manage hazards. These directions may be given before the hazard is encountered or may need to be given during exposure to the hazard.  

    • Stay alert and focused for several hours at a time while traveling and working in varied weather conditions  

    • Perceive and comprehend significant and apparent hazards, including those hazards previously identified by others.  

    • Respond appropriately to stress or crises.  

    • If taking prescription medications, participants must be able to maintain proper dosage by self-medicating without assistance from others.  

    • ENVIRONMENTAL ETHICS:  

    • Learn and practice ‘Leave No Trace’ techniques  

    • Outdoor Skills and Fitness (where appropriate)  

    • Learn and safely perform fundamental outdoor living/travel and work skills as appropriate to the project. Additionally, remain adequately hydrated, fed, and properly dressed so as to remain generally healthy and safe, avoiding environmental injuries.  

    • Live in a physically demanding, possibly remote environment for an uninterrupted period of up to several weeks. Conditions of this environment may vary significantly and may include severe and/or trying weather. The remoteness is such that it may require at a minimum one hour, but perhaps in excess of 12 hours, to reach the nearest advanced medical care.  

    • SUBSTANCE FREE:  

    • In accordance to a drug free workplace, alcohol and drugs are prohibited while participating in program activities and while on organization property.

      

      

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:   

    Periodic overnight travel and non-traditional work hours, inclusive of weekend and evening hours. To successfully perform essential functions the Residential Youth Crew Member is required to sit, stand, walk, speak and hear. The Residential Youth Crew Member may be required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl on an infrequent basis. They must be able to operate office equipment, telephone, and computer and reach with hands and arms. The Residential Youth Crew Member may be required to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted. Reasonable accommodations may be made for qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  

      

      

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

    • Flexibility, adaptability and capacity to work in a fluid, changing work environment.  

    • Current high school student (or equivalent), recent graduate, or GED  

    • Must be between the ages of 16 and 18, and a US citizen. You must be 16 years of age or older prior to the start of the program and cannot turn 19 years old before the end of the program.

    IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL:

    • Follow all work safety policies, programs and guidelines
    • Assist in the set up and operation of industrial machinery in accordance with LQC’s established standards, processes and work instructions
    • Maintain proficiency by performing the skill on a regular schedule
    • Assist with minor repairs to equipment
    • Support the operation of production equipment, notifying appropriate personnel of any malfunctions and/or safety issues/concerns and maximize overall equipment efficiency for production rate, first time quality and downtime
    • Perform necessary pre-operation and/or shut down activities to ensure proper equipment operation
    • Assist with product quality by conducting visual and tool measurement inspections, monitoring and adjusting machine output settings, and conducting basic quality control and quality assurance tests
    • Drive quality standards and operational efficiencies, offering recommendations for improvements, as you contribute directly to overall plant operations.
    • Maintain a clean and organized work area
    • Communicate effectively to all other team members
    • Problem solving for continuous improvement and equipment trouble shooting
    • Train others with the skills and knowledge gained from position

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • High School diploma or equivalent
    • A minimum of 1-3 years of work experience within a manufacturing environment preferred
    • Ability to fill in for operator on their assigned machine during absences
    • Ability to read a tape measure
    • Ability to lift 50 pounds
    • Basic computer skills such as typing, printing and data entry
    • Basic math (addition, subtraction and fractions)
    • Ability to read work instructions (i.e. SOP’s, Specs, etc.)
