    **Job Summary: **

    Reporting to the Assistant Vice President and Chief of Staff, the Director of Bias Response and Prevention oversees the University’s efforts to address and prevent incidents of bias and discrimination involving students. In this role, the Director of Bias Response and Prevention will develop and execute comprehensive student bias complaint response protocols; lead initiatives to raise student awareness about issues related to bias and discrimination; and collaborate closely with various University departments, student organizations, and external resources to effectively address issues of bias and discrimination as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct.

    **Essential Functions : **

    _Policy and Procedures: _

    • Develop and implement policies, procedures, and protocols for responding to complaints of bias and discrimination against students, ensuring consistency, fairness, and adherence to legal requirements in accordance with the student code of conduct.

    • Regularly review and assess policies, procedures, and protocols related to complaints of bias and discrimination against students to align with best practices and legal requirements and to meet the campus community's needs.

    _Bias Response /Investigations: _

    • Receive and promptly respond to all complaints of bias and discrimination made against students, ensuring confidentiality and sensitivity throughout the process.

    • Conduct thorough and impartial investigations into reported bias incidents against students, including gathering evidence, interviewing involved parties, preparing investigative reports, documenting findings utilizing university’s student conduct software, recommending appropriate resolutions and sanctions, and monitoring results in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.

    • Ensure that the investigative process is fair and respectful of all involved parties, consistent with St. John’s mission, values, and non-discrimination policies in accordance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and with the student conduct process.

    • Provide support and resources to students who have experienced bias or discrimination, including referrals to counseling services and academic accommodations.

    • Maintain accurate records of bias and discrimination complaints, investigations, and outcomes utilizing university’s conduct software.

    • Sustain regular contact and communication with General Counsel’s office, consulting with legal counsel as needed regarding incidents, investigations, or developments related to reports of bias and discrimination involving students.

    • Collaborate with University stakeholders, including the Office of Student Conduct, Office of Equal Opportunity and Compliance, the Title IX Coordinator, RESPECT – the University’s bias response team, General Counsel’s Office, and the Office of Equity and Inclusion, to ensure consistent and coordinated responses to bias and discrimination complaints.

    _Bias Awareness and Prevention : _

    • Serve as a resource and advisor to University administrators, faculty, staff, and students on matters related to bias and discrimination prevention and response.

    • Develop and implement educational programs, workshops, and initiatives to raise awareness about issues related to bias, discrimination, and inclusivity within the student body.

    • Develop and deliver training to the University community on reporting complaints of bias and discrimination involving students.

    • Analyze data on bias and discrimination incidents involving students, including trends and outcomes to identify areas for targeted bias awareness and prevention measures.

    • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of bias and discrimination prevention efforts and make recommendations for improvement as needed.

    _Student Conduct: _

    • Serve as a student conduct administrator for incidents involving students documented for alleged violations of the Student Code of Conduct.

    • Engage students in developmentally appropriate conversations to address and resolve student conduct matters and collaborate with University departments for resolution of student problems or concerns.

    • Determine independently the outcomes of all conduct matters assigned and ensure that all independently determined sanctions are completed in the prescribed timeframe.

    **Competencies : **

    • Experience conducting complex investigations and resolving conflicts involving bias and discrimination.

    • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and best practices related to bias and discrimination in higher education, including Title VI, Title IX, Clery Act, and ADA.

    • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and conflict resolution skills with the ability to build relationships and engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.

    • Strong writing and analytical skills (writing sample may be requested).

    • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize effectively.

    • Commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education and creating a welcoming and affirming environment for all members of a campus community.

    Work Environment:

    This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, etc.

    Physical Demands:

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; move about; sit; to carry work and use controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; communicate. Specific vision abilities required by the employee include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

    Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

    This is a full-time [on-campus / hybrid work eligible] position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

    **Required Education and Experience : **

    • A minimum of 5 years of experience investigating complaints of bias/discrimination.

    • BA or BS in relevant discipline required.

    Preferred Education and Experience:

    • Related Master’s degree or Juris Doctor.

    • Experience working in a University setting, particularly Student Conduct or Student Affairs.

    • Experience working with Maxient student conduct software.

    In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary range for this position is $115,000 - $125,000. St. John’s University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.

    This position may be relocated to any of St. John’s University’s physical locations at any time.
