  • Responsibilities

    Incumbent serves as School Health Liaison for the Morgan County Health Department, responsible for building relationships with schools and providing resources, programs, services, education and other support to schools in Morgan County. Candidate must have a strong background in physical activity and nutrition to be considered.

    Builds relationships with community partners, including but not limited to school faculty, school nurses, school guidance counselors and other school staff, churches, community-based organizations to provide resources and build awareness of support and services available. Works with schools to determine the support needed, including reviewing and compiling applicable data to assess needs.

    Maintains school and community partner contact list and communicates with Indiana Department of Health. Evaluates partnerships, including assessing current services available, gaps in services, and determines organizations available to collaborate.

    Supports schools in enhancing health initiatives and developing new programs.

    Oversees Health Department funding in schools, including budgets, check-ins, site visits and invoicing.

    Completes data collection and reporting requirements, including tracking initiatives, and providing updates to Director, Health Officer and Board of Health.

    Creates and maintains newsletter, educational, and marketing materials.

    Provides variety of services and supports, including childhood vaccines seasonal vaccines, health screenings, feminine hygiene supplies, nurse clinic supplies, school wellness policies, and whole child health such as physical and mental health.

    Provides education and programming, including Stop the Bleed, CPR, handwashing, dental care, immunizations, vision and hearing screenings, tobacco prevention/cessation, substance use, physical activity and nutrition.

    Creates resource list of services and referrals in community to share with schools. Provides referrals for medications, tube feedings, glasses, dental care, clothing, hygiene, insurance enrollment assistance, and mental health resources.

    Collaborates with Health Department Emergency Preparedness Division to provide training and supplies such as naloxone, epinephrine, albuterol and AEDs.

    Creates and maintains list of services Local Health Department (LHD) can provide schools, allowing schools to select services as needed. Identifies external and internal resources available to support schools to sustain best practices and initiatives as identified.

    Performs variety of activities to improve school-age vaccination rates, providing tobacco education, access to mental health resources, providing emergency medication, and training to staff, and assisting with dental, hearing, and vision care.

    Collaborates with various medical professionals regarding client care, health, and referrals.

    Communicates, promotes, and advocates for health and health education activities in schools and in the community. Identifies deficiencies in student health and wellness programs and works with school staff to improve programs.

    Supports and assists schools with communicable disease response plans, ensuring continuity of planning throughout the jurisdiction and maintaining communicable disease reporting.

    Associate or bachelor's degree in nursing, Public Health, Community Health, Health Education, Social Work or related field. Nursing degree must be licensed in the State of Indiana, with at least one (1) year of experience preferred.

    Possession of and/or ability to obtain and maintain CPR for Healthcare Providers and Tuberculosis Certifications, and ability to complete training and earn certifications in physical activity, nutrition, health behaviors, health coaching and/or other applicable areas as needed.

    Working knowledge of Indiana Code related to public health and schools, with ability to comply with all codes and ordinances at State and local level.

    Knowledge of public health laws and accepted principles and practices of public health nursing, with the ability to effectively assess needs, and provide information and referrals for schools.

    Knowledge of current physical activity and nutrition guidelines and recommendations. Ability to implement evidence-based physical activity and nutrition programs.

    Knowledge of health and social services available to County residents and ability to implement public health programs and facilitate referrals as appropriate.

    Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, Health Officer, Board of Health, IDOH, medical professionals, school personnel, mental health professionals, Head Start, churches, community organizations, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.

    Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of Department information and records according to state requirements.

    Ability to prepare and deliver public speeches/presentations, and to create newsletters, educational and marketing materials.

    Ability to compile, analyze and evaluate data, make determinations, and take action based on data analysis, and fabricate data to discover facts or develop concepts or interpretations.

    Ability to apply knowledge of people and locations, and plan and coordinate work assignments.

    Ability to read and interpret medical terminology, detailed reference books, medical textbooks and nursing manuals.

    Ability to maintain positive community support and present public speaking presentations and special events.

    Incumbent reports directly to Health Department Director.
