    Job Description

    We are seeking an experienced School Nurse to join our faculty and staff community. This is a full time position that is responsible for the day-to-day management of the School’s Health Office with a focus on student health, wellness and management of medical records and provides support on employee related health matters. This position serves as a liaison to the community on health and wellness issues and provides education and training on health issues to students, employees and families.

    Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

    Health Care

    • Provide direct and thoughtful nursing care to ill or injured students or staff during the school year and when on-site during summer program
    • Assess students physically and emotionally and take appropriate steps to address student health needs
    • Be aware of barriers to learning for students, i.e. vision, hearing, vaccination status, mental health; collaborate with teachers, student wellness team and administration as necessary
    • Observe and report any unusual finding or unsafe activity to administration
    • Maintain tracking of student visits to the health office
    • Supervise the assistant nurse including mentorship, training, delegation of responsibilities and completing employee evaluations
    • Maintain health office in clean, orderly and safe condition with special attention to confidential information, inventory management, secured student medication and safe disposal procedures
    • Administer medications and manage chronic illness in coordination with individually developed care plans
    • Track student absence and illness, notifying appropriate parties of communicable diseases
    • Be available to attend camp programs if deemed necessary

    Health Policies & Records

    • Assist with the development and maintenance of school health policies and tracking log to record information regarding student visits to the health office
    • Manage school health records in accordance with Illinois School Students Records Act
    • Maintain accurate medical records to assure compliance with state mandates including immunizations, physical examinations, and medical conditions
    • Update and provide allergy information to all classroom staff pertaining to their specific students
    • Prepare all necessary medical information, materials and forms for camps or other school activities; provide basic training to staff responsible for student medical care and medication management at camp, prepare personnel to support children with specific medical conditions at these school events
    • Adherence to all Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Protected Health Information (PHI) requirements
    • Adherence to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), while also upholding relevant aspects of the Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act (HIPAA)

    Health & Wellness Education

    • Provide health and wellness information and programs to students, parents, faculty and staff
    • Initiate contact with, and act as a liaison between home, school, community health agencies, independent school nurse’s groups and the private medical sector to enhance the health and wellness of the school community
    • Maintain communication with administration, teachers, staff, and families to foster a partnership focused on the health and safety needs of the students
    • Acquire professional training related to information relevant to the school population by attending educational conferences, training workshops and other related activities
    • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required, assigned, or requested
    • Other responsibilities as assigned and needed
  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

    • Registered Nurse (RN) licensed to practice in Illinois
    • Minimum two years professional nursing experience, preferably in a school or pediatric setting
    • Current First Aid, CPR and AED certification
    • School Nurse certification a plus but not required
    • Knowledge of children's intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development
    • Highly motivated with outstanding oral, written, and interpersonal skills; strong organizational skills
    • Demonstrates sensitivity, good judgment, professional boundaries and confidentiality in working with sensitive information related to students and families
    • Excellent communication skills, sound judgment, ability to make decisions in the moment, confident in expertise related to school health and emotional maturity
    • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Google Drive tools
    • Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred
    • Ability to maintain high levels of confidentiality
    • Hours of work are consistent Monday to Friday, evenings or weekend consultation may be required when health-related issues arise that impact the school community

    Additional Information

    Pay Information: The salary range for this position is $70,000 - $75,000 based on skills and experience.
