Position Summary: Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson (JMT) is seeking a full-time Architectural Historian with 8+ years’ experience to assist our Cultural Resources team. The position will entail technical work focusing on historic structures documentation and evaluation, and architectural survey work.

Additional JMT office locations may be considered.

The successful candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary team including archaeologists, architectural historians, historians, environmental scientists, engineers, and planners. The qualified candidate must be able to write at a professional level and present ideas in a well thought-out and comprehensive manner. The preferred candidate will enjoy a variety of working conditions ranging from field efforts to office analysis.

Compensation is $75,000. - $100,000. annual salary, commensurate with experience, education, and certifications.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Serves as Principal Investigator for architectural resource documentation and evaluation projects
• Oversees Junior Staff
• Coordinates directly with project managers and agency staff
• Conducts archival and background research
• Conducts architectural and historical field surveys
• Evaluates resource for NRHP eligibility
• Assesses effects as required under Section 106 of the NHPA and applicable state historic preservation laws
• Documents methodologies and findings of research and investigations
• Prepares architectural inventory forms
• Writes architectural and historical resources reports
• Assists in making decisions about project alternatives and the resolution of adverse effects to architectural resources
• Assists in the preparation of scopes of work, fee proposals, and responses to RFP’s
• Writes property descriptions, historical narratives, significance statements, and National Register justifications

• Performs other related duties as assigned

Required Skills

• Strong writing skills and experience composing architectural descriptions and historic context statements for survey reports and other documentation
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Required Experience

• Master’s degree in Historic Preservation (or a related field) from an accredited school in Historic Preservation
• Minimum of 8 years of experience conducting historic architectural surveys for regulatory compliance
• Familiarity with the National Historic Preservation Act, including Section 106, and related state laws
• Meets, or exceeds, the requirements for an Architectural Historian and/or Historian under the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards
• Must possess a valid driver’s license and be capable of renting a car

Preferred Experience

• Experience conducting archival research
• Experience in project management
• Familiarity with AutoCAD and/or Microstation
• Familiarity with ArcMap, and/or other GIS Programs
• Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign
• Experience with digital photography (including DSLR cameras)
• FHWA or ACHP Certified Section 106 Course

Working Conditions

Work is performed in the field up to 50% of the time and may require the ability to extensively perform bending, kneeling, standing, shoveling, and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 25 lbs as needed. Field work will require walking and carrying field equipment over typical outdoor terrain. Work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions.

Office work is performed within a general office environment 50% of the time. Office work is generally sedentary in nature but may require occasional standing and walking. Office work is performed with adequate lighting and temperature, with no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc.

The position will entail up to 50 percent travel throughout the United States. Candidate must be willing to travel throughout the U.S. for brief (e.g., 1 or 2 week) work efforts on their own as well as with coworkers.
