Senior Counsel I – Business & Real Estate Litigation
A Newport Beach law firm is seeking a Senior Counsel I with expertise in business and real estate litigation, particularly in land-use issues involving multimillion-dollar properties. We are a recognized leader in the manufactured housing industry and known statewide for our legal victories.
This role offers the opportunity to manage complex cases, serve as first or second chair in trials, and collaborate on high-profile litigation matters. The firm is based in Newport Beach but may consider remote/hybrid arrangements for the right candidate.
Position Overview
The Senior Counsel I will oversee complex business and real estate litigation, including case strategy, discovery, depositions, trials, arbitrations, and hearings. This role requires exceptional legal acumen, the ability to manage high-stakes cases, and strong collaboration with the firm's leadership.
Qualifications:
- 8-15 years of experience in business and real estate litigation
- Ability to bill a minimum of 1,700 hours per year
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
- Active California State Bar membership with no disciplinary record
- Proven experience in discovery, depositions, hearings, mediation, and arbitrations
- Strong knowledge of civil procedure, evidence, and substantive law
- First-chair trial experience (minimum 5 trials to verdict)
- Excellent research, analytical, and communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple cases, meet deadlines, and prioritize effectively
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Experience managing associate attorneys is a plus
Preferred Experience:
- Municipal law experience
- Complex litigation background
- Construction defect litigation
- Publications such as legal articles or published appellate cases
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead business and real estate litigation cases, including land-use disputes
- Act as primary attorney in civil trials and arbitrations
- Conduct legal research, case strategy development, and motion practice
- Draft and respond to discovery requests, interrogatories, and depositions
- Handle motions, including dismissals and motions in limine
- Oversee settlement negotiations and dispute resolution
- Provide legal counsel on risks and litigation strategies
- Manage key client relationships, budgets, and trial calendars
- Supervise associate attorneys and legal staff
Compensation & Benefits:
- Salary Range: $190,000 – $250,000/year
