Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Senior Speech Pathologist, acute care pediatric/NICU - temporary full time.
In this role, the successful candidate Provides speech-language pathology services under supervision, and any other duties deemed necessary by the Department Head.
Job Responsibilities:
- Guides, informs, counsels and provides training to patient/family. Interprets assessment findings and provides information to patient and family in a timely fashion. Provides information regarding access to SLP services. Engages family in ongoing treatment planning, training re: techniques to improve communication function. Orients patient caregivers to SLP treatment and interprets SLP role and involves caregivers (as necessary) in planning for treatment termination. Provides opportunity for expression of feelings regarding the SLP disorder. Provides information regarding community resources (support services, web sites, etc.).
- Effectively assesses patients communication function and abilities. Screens patient for identification of SLP assessment needs and assigns accurate FIM or WEE FIM ratings. Uses medical and social history to determine constraints on evaluations. Demonstrates thorough patient/family interviewing techniques to determine functional communication, establish patients understanding of SLP goals for treatment, recovery expectations and desire for SLP treatment. Conducts SLP evaluation according to P&P manual. Confers with Program Manager/Supervisor regarding recommendations for patient management.
- Develops, evaluates and plans speech-language pathology treatment programs. Amends treatment plans according to changing communication needs and requirements. Uses medical, psycho-social information results of SLP evaluation and patient stated goals to develop realistic plan for patients. Provides clear rationale for all aspects of treatment plan, re-evaluates and amends plan as necessary. Monitors and reassesses functional and clinical programs in a complete manner. Anticipates and plans for discharge.
- Conducts group and individual therapy sessions. Implements plan in individual/group sessions appropriately. Establishes/maintains accepting climate for expression of feelings. Uses tact, empathy, and timing in provision of feedback.
- Acts as representative of SLP department at interdisciplinary team conference. Provides concise relevant reports regarding evaluation findings and progress to physician and team to enhance their understanding of speech language pathology. Conveys recommendations for speech/language therapy made by the SLP and discussed at department meetings. Clarifies patients needs and represents patient to the team when needed. Acts as liaison between the SLP department and the interdisciplinary service involved (e.g. nursing, occupational therapy etc.)
- Documents treatments rendered in accordance with departmental protocol. Maintains clinical documentation according to Departmental P&P manual. Completes concise, accurate, timely documentation. Keeps patient documentation confidential. Maintains security of all files. Follows insurance (e.g. Medicare) guidelines for documentation. Documents patient attendance accurately and in a timely fashion.
- Participates in implementing the Health Career Opportunity Program and in training externs in Speech-Language Pathology Department. Designs schedule of activities and observations for the HCO program. Orients HCO students to the department and explains requirements of their experience. Provides supervision to externs assigned to therapists cases to enhance trainees level of knowledge and facilitate trainees professional growth. Assists in trainee evaluation and confers with Program manager/ supervisor regarding trainee progress.
- Responsible for special duties necessary for ongoing operation of department. Carries out assignment as described in P&P manual in a timely fashion. May take responsibility for maintaining the daily operation of clinical services.
- Demonstrates continued proficiency in skills required to treat assigned patient population.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a MA/MS degree in Speech-Language Pathology; CCC-SLP form ASHA and NY State license in Speech Pathology.
Three years prior experience as a Speech Therapist required. BLS certification (Issued by the American Heart Association-AHA) OR Heartsaver CPR/AED certification (Issued by the American Heart Association-AHA) is required upon entry to the position..
Required Licenses: Speech Pathologist License -NYS, ASHA Cert

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $104,572.15 - $118,558.44 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
