    GUIDELINES FOR SHEETMETAL MECHANIC

    JOURNEYPERSON 4 (Sheetmetal Mechanic)

    • Must meet all Journeyman 3 Sheetmetal Mechanic requirements.
    • Must be able to read and interpret mechanical drawings, layout, fabricate, install, and repair sheet metal products related to shipboard construction HVAC and habitability and have an excellent knowledge of the various types of metals and sizes.
    • Excellent knowledge of Habitability layout and installation of metal joiner (MJ) bulkheads, MJ doors, berths, galleys and office outfitting.
    • Operate press brake, hand brake, power rollers, hand rollers, general sheet metal fabrication equipment.
    • Write WAFs and hot work tickets and perform trade quality assurance work, with little to no supervision.

     

    JOURNEYPERSON 3 (Sheetmetal Mechanic)

    • Must meet all Journeyman 2 Sheetmetal Mechanic requirements.
    • Must be able to read and interpret mechanical drawings, layout, assemble, install and repair sheet metal products related to shipboard construction HVAC and habitability.
    • Must have the ability to assemble ventilation runs in accordance with drawings, specifications and meet Navy shipboard standard detail requirements.
    • Excellent knowledge of Habitability layout and installation of metal joiner (MJ) bulkhead, MJ doors, berths, galleys and office outfitting. This is to be accomplished with minimum supervision.

     

    JOURNEYPERSON 2 (Sheetmetal Mechanic)

    • Must meet all Journeyman 1 Sheetmetal Mechanic requirements.
    • Moderate ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, layout, assemble, install and repair sheet metal products related to Shipboard construction HVAC and Habitability.
    • Have the ability to assist, with little supervision, in the assembly of ventilation runs in accordance with drawings, spec’s and meet Navy shipboard standard detail requirements.
    • Have knowledge of habitability layout and installation of MJB, MJ doors, berths, galleys and office outfitting. This is to be accomplished with some supervisor guidance.
    • Must have the ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, Identify material, layout, fabricate with the use of power and manual equipment; press brake, hand brake, power rollers, hand rollers, punch press, drill press, hand tools and general sheet metal fabrication equipment.
    • Must be able to repair sheet metal products related to Shipboard construction HVAC and Habitability, with some supervisor guidance.

     

    JOURNEYPERSON 1 (Sheetmetal Mechanic)

    • Must be able to ensure that tank/ compartment has an updated safe for hot work ticket and that requirements of the ticket have been met. (Example: ventilation, lighting, safety equipment etc.).
    • Must be able to ensure that conditions of the tank/compartment have not changed since the ticket was written. (Example: fuel run back, unsafe working conditions, etc.).
    • Must be able to ensure that a Work Authorization Form (WAF) ticket is on the job site and that it is for the specific job being accomplished. Must ensure that no work will be accomplished without a WAF posted at location of repairs.
    • Must be able to ensure that any other safety issues are complied with that relate to the specific job being accomplished (Example: special staging, face shields for grinding, protective clothing for hot work related jobs, breathing apparatus with correct cartridges, etc.).
    • Must be able to ensure that you are trained or qualified for the work you are assigned to do (Example: JLG, forklift, welding, brazing, special electrical / mechanical repairs and etc.).
    • Must be able to ensure that you and personnel working under your direction are working as safely and as productively as possible, maintaining quality control at all times.
    • Must be able to ensure that job site is left in a safe and clean condition prior to departure.
    • Must have the basic understanding of mechanical drawings, layout, assembly, installation and repair of sheet metal products related to Shipboard construction HVAC and Habitability. Must have basic understanding of power and manual equipment; press brake, hand brake, power rollers, hand rollers, punch press, drill press, and hand tools used for general sheet metal fabrication.
    • Must have the knowledge of the various types of metals and sizes.
    • Must have the ability to assist in the assembly of ventilation runs in accordance with drawings, specifications and meet Navy shipboard standard detail requirements.
    • Must have a basic knowledge of habitability layout and installation of metal joiner (MJ) bulkheads, MJ doors, berths, galleys and office outfitting. This is to be accomplished with supervisor guidance.
    • Must be able to repair sheet metal products related to Shipboard construction HVAC and habitability, with supervisor guidance.
    • Ability to plan, organize and prioritize well.
    • Must be able to perform job safely.
    • Must know what personal protective equipment (PPE) to use and when.
    • Must be able to navigate a ship and understand compartment designation.
    • Must have basic knowledge of math.
