Shelter Veterinarian – Humane Society for Hamilton County

    Location: Fishers, IN | Full-Time | Mission-Driven | No-Kill Shelter | Cutting-Edge Facility

    About Us

At the Humane Society for Hamilton County (HSHC), we’re not just a shelter—we’re a lifeline. We intake over 4,000 animals annually, including hundreds transferred from overcrowded shelters at risk of euthanasia. As one of the only truly no-kill, open-admission shelters in the country, our mission is clear: Saving Lives. Educating Communities. Completing Families.

In April 2021, we opened a $12M world-class facility equipped with advanced surgical suites, quarantine zones, behavior modification areas, and spaces designed to reduce stress and increase life quality for every animal in our care.

    Position Overview

We are seeking a Shelter Veterinarian to join our collaborative, skilled, and passionate Medical Department. This is a highly impactful role for someone with a heart for rescue and hands ready to do “whatever it takes.” You’ll lead clinical care and surgical services for shelter animals, working closely with our Medical Manager (RVT), Lead Surgical Technician, and Medical Coordinators.

    What You’ll Do

Diagnose, treat, and monitor animals in a fast-paced, high-volume shelter environment

Provide trauma, emergency, and routine medical care to strays, owner surrenders, and cruelty cases

Evaluate and continuously improve standard operating procedures (SOPs)

Ensure compliance with controlled substance regulations, maintaining all logs and reporting

Mentor and guide medical staff; no direct admin management required

Collaborate across departments to support whole-shelter health initiatives

Provide guidance on humane euthanasia when necessary for severe cases

Engage in forensic necropsy or court testimony in cruelty investigations when required

    Key Qualifications

DVM license (Indiana or eligible to transfer)

Experience in shelter medicine and HQHV spay/neuter

Deep commitment to no-kill philosophy and animal advocacy

Skilled in surgical procedures with confidence in complex casework

    Excellent communication and leadership skills

Able to handle fast-paced, emotionally rewarding environments

    Benefits

Anthem Medical, Dental, Vision, FSA/HSA, Disability, AD&D, Identity Theft Protection

    Employer contribution to health plans

PTO starts accruing Day One (negotiable start amount)

Paid time off for CE (course cost not included)

    Why Join HSHC?

You’ll work with a team that values collaboration, compassion, and continuous growth. You’ll be empowered to practice best-in-class shelter medicine with access to the tools, training, and team you need to save lives daily — and change the face of animal welfare across Indiana.
