POSITION DESCRIPTION
- Position Title: Special Education Teacher
- School/Department: Designated Elementary School
- Supervisor: Principal and Assistant Principal
- Terms of Employment: Per Collective Bargaining Agreement
Primary Function:
To plan and implement learning activities aligned with the Corporation’s educational programming to continuously develop students’ knowledge and skills so that they are prepared to pursue college and/or career opportunities.
Essential Duties:
- Recognize the basic dignities of students, parents and families, colleagues, and subordinates.
- Exercise due care to protect the mental and physical safety of students.
- Create a safe, respectful, and orderly classroom environment that promotes students’ academic and social-emotional growth.
- Collaborate with case conference committees to develop Individualized Educational Programs (IEPs) that describe how students will access the general education curriculum, if appropriate, and the special education services and related services needed to participate in the educational environment.
- Collaborate with general education teachers to ensure students’ IEPs are correctly implemented.
- Plan learning activities that are aligned with Indiana Academic Standards.
- Implement learning activities using Corporation-adopted curricular materials and intervention materials that promote students’ mastery of general education curriculum and IEP goals.
- Monitor students’ progress towards IEP goals and prepare and share quarterly progress reports.
- Schedule special education meetings and share all notices and reports within specified timelines.
- Initiate and maintain collaborative relationships with students’ parents and families.
- Continuously strive to learn and develop new skills to promote student learning.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Essential Qualifications and Characteristics:
- The education and educator license or permit required by the Indiana Department of Education

- A past record clear of criminal activity and child abuse or neglect
Working Conditions:
The duties of this position are performed in a classroom environment. Persons are required to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch. Additionally, persons may need to lift objects up to 50 pounds. Specific vision requirements include close vision, distant vision, and depth perception. Noise levels in the working environments may be moderately loud or loud. Occasionally, persons are required to work outdoors in varied weather conditions. Persons are also required to maintain emotional composure under stress.
