    Job Overview: 

    We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Spinal Cord Injury Registered Nurse (RN) to provide high-quality nursing care at our Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Service. The ideal candidate will have a broad-based clinical knowledge to manage various health conditions, promote health and prevention, and support patients in achieving optimal rehabilitation. the RN will utilize their broad-based clinical knowledge to effectively assess, implement health promotion and prevention interventions, manage acute and chronic illness states, assist patients in the attainment of optimal levels of functioning rehabilitation, evaluate patient response to actual or potential health problems, and provide supportive measures for the dying patient and their significant others. Nursing care shall be performed in accordance with the American Nursing Association's Standards of Care and Standards of Professional Performance, and within the individual nurse's scope of license. The Nurse Manager(s), or appropriate nursing leadership delegate (i.e., Assistant Nurse Manager), will provide the RN with clinical oversight during their tour of duty. This position also requires compliance with the American Nursing Association’s Standards of Care and Professional Performance, adherence to regulatory requirements and patient confidentiality, a safe patient care environment including familiarity with requirements such as medication administration, patient/family education, discharge process, hazardous waste disposal, etc., as defined by The Joint Commission and all other regulatory bodies and other duties as assigned. The RN will receive clinical oversight from the Nurse Manager or appropriate nursing leadership delegate during shift.     Experience Requirement:

    • Minimum of 1 year SCI experience or a minimum of 2 years Med/Surg experience
    • Computer literacy as patient documentation is directly inputted in the patient’s electronic medical record
    • Proficiency in Oracle
    • Completing all patient documentation before shift ending
    • Assessing patient health care needs and maintaining/developing plan of care to meet interdisciplinary goals
    • Assessing and acting on significant changes in patient's health condition
    • Carrying out the plan of care by performing/assigning delegated tasks
    • Collecting and documenting pertinent data into the electronic patient medical record
    • Communicating and treating all patients and/or families in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner
    • Identifying and acting on patient's predictable needs 
    • Meeting patient health care needs by assessing and assisting the patient
    • Meeting the emotional and spiritual needs of patients and/or families
    • Prioritizing and completing tasks within the RN's assigned shift
    • Notifying assigned physician of any changes in condition and updating patient care plans
    • Reporting incidents of verbal or physical abuse immediately to assigned unit Nurse Manager of or designated off-shift nursing leadership
    • Performing head-to-toe assessment
    • Inserting IV lines
    • Caring of PICC lines
    • Administering medication including IVs
    • Coordinating and participating in admission, transfer, and discharge of patient
    • Measuring vital signs, including Pain (the 5th Vital Sign), pulse oximetry, etc.
    • Completing EKG as needed
    • Performing wound care including dressing changes and obtaining wound cultures as necessary
    • Obtaining and delivering specimens to lab
    • Performing tracheostomy care
    • Performing non-acute/acute ventilator care
    • Performing suctioning including oral, nasogastric, and tracheostomy
    • Assessing for and administer tube feedings
    • Assisting with routine urinary and bowel elimination including indwelling and suprapubic catheters, colostomies, external devices, and digital stimulation
    • Educating patients and/or families regarding health and diagnoses and medication administration
    • Activating the Emergency Medical Response as indicated based on patient presentation or change in condition
    • Responding and assisting in an emergency 
    • Performing Continuous Protective Observation (CPO) duties to maintain veterans' safety
    • Performing patient belongings and Contraband inspection and documentation as outlined by facility policy
    • Providing clinical oversight to Licensed Practical Nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, and Health Technicians
    • Performing Rapid Response and Cardiac Arrest (code) response within the unit.
    • Accu-checks

    Experience Preferences:

    • Experience working with veteran patients of all ages

    Physical Requirements:

    • Ability to lift 35+ lbs., per OSHA recommendations

    Education Requirements:

    • Associates degree from an ACEN or CCNE accredited Nursing program
    • Current and unrestricted license in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification or equivalency recognized by the American Heart Association
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certifications from the American Heart Association

    Education Preferences:

    • Bachelor’s degree from an ACEN or CCNE accredited Nursing program

    Schedule:

    • 12 Hour shift (AM Shift 7:30am – 8:00am/PM Shift 7:30PM – 8:00PM) with half an hour lunch break. Coverage may include holidays, weekends, evenings, or overnights, and are variable within a 24-hour period.
    • Overtime may be required and must be approved by the Nurse Manager.
