    Job Description

Statewide Legal Services of Connecticut seeks an attorney who is excited by the idea of empowering low-income people with civil legal needs. SLS is a dynamic remote-services legal aid helpline, providing high quality legal counseling, advice, referrals and self-help opportunities. Our services give thousands of people each year the tools to understand and to resolve life-impacting cases such as evictions, domestic violence, consumer debt-defense and public benefit denials and appeals. We also conduct community outreach and education to local service providers and client groups, often in collaboration with other legal aid entities and service organizations within the Connecticut Network for Legal Aid. SLS contributes substantive and technical support to the legal aid website, www.CTLawHelp.org, as an important part of its service delivery system. In the coming months we will be looking to place a greater emphasis on our strong commitment to race equity and to better understand the effects of climate change on our low-income clients, alongside our core values and mission. The ideal candidate will have some background in at least one of these substantive areas: housing, public benefits, elder law, or family, and ideally has worked with people of low-income or marginalized populations. In addition, the attorney will be expected, at times, to participate in a grant-related project that requires outreach and community legal education when the opportunity presents. We encourage the attorney to take a thoughtful and participatory approach to program development in areas of priority setting, strategic planning, outreach and outcome measurements. Because of our fast-paced environment, the ideal candidate will already have a basic proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, digital case management or similar systems. SLS has temporarily closed its physical office space in response to the current pandemic and SLS attorneys and staff are working remotely. We will provide appropriate equipment and IT services to allow connection to the SLS hotline, case management system, and to all our networked capacities. The candidate must have sufficient bandwidth capacities. SLS will be exploring hybrid work-place models in 2022. Spanish oral and literacy proficiency is strongly preferred. SLS is an Equal Opportunity employer. We encourage applicants from all backgrounds, ages, ethnicities and gender-identities/neutral to apply. Salary commensurate with experience. SLS offers a generous benefits package, including health, dental, disability, paid leave, and 401K. . Deadline for submission: Open until filled No phone calls or hard copy letters please. Company Description We are a legal aid advice and referral center helping low-income people solve their legal problems. We believe that everyone should have access to justice.
