  • Responsibilities

    The Mortuary Science Faculty position is a full-time, 9-month faculty position in the Mortuary Science Department. ACC Faculty teach 15 credits each fall and spring semester. Faculty may have the option to teach courses during the summer semester for additional compensation. Courses may be taught using both traditional and non-traditional delivery methods, including online, hybrid, or accelerated. Courses may be offered during the day or evening, and/or on satellite campuses.

    Faculty are expected to advise students, engage in student retention activities, assess student learning, select textbooks, evaluate curriculum, serve on College and Department committees, and attend meetings and functions. Additionally, the faculty member may be asked to assist the Program Chair as needed and perform related administrative duties for accreditation such as program assessment, evaluating curriculum, coordinating clinical practicums, providing clinical instructor orientation, course scheduling, serving on the program advisory committee, and maintaining and developing relationships with industry and healthcare providers.

    The Mortuary Science Program at Arapahoe Community College is the only program in Colorado that is accredited by the American Board of Funeral Service Education. ACC offers an Associate of Applied Science in Mortuary Science with both in-person and online tracks to educate students in every phase of funeral service and prepare them for entry-level employment in the industry.

    QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

    • Bachelor’s degree, or higher, from a regionally accredited institution.
    • Faculty must earn a master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution within five years of their initial appointment date.
    • Must be a graduate of an ABFSE-accredited school.
    • Must have passed the Mortuary Science National Board Exam.
    • Postsecondary instructional experience or training equivalent.
    • Must hold, or qualify to obtain, a postsecondary Colorado Career and Technical Education (CTE) credential including 4,000 paid non-teaching occupational hours within the last five years.

    Current teachers applying to teach ACC campus-based, online, or concurrent enrollment CTE courses may include non-teaching occupational hours that are older than the 5-year requirement if they have the required degree (and license/certifications as listed) and a minimum of 3 years full-time teaching experience in the discipline/program or 6 years part-time teaching experience in the discipline/program.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Experience as an embalmer and funeral director.
    • Understanding of ABFSE accreditation requirements.
    • Postsecondary teaching experience, ideally with program chair responsibilities.
    • Demonstrated success building professional relationships and working collaboratively with internal and external constituents and outside agencies.
    • Ability to work effectively both autonomously and as a member of a collaborative team.
    • Understanding of adult learning theory concepts; ability to utilize these principles effectively in the learning environment.
    • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.

    PHYSICAL & COGNITIVE DEMANDS

    The following are some of the physical and cognitive demands commonly associated with this position.

    • Occasionally moves, positions, and transports items weighing up to 50 lbs. on campus and off-site clinical facilities.
    • This position operates in an office, classroom, lab environment, and/or clinical facilities. Constantly uses a computer and routinely uses standard office equipment including phones, copiers, etc.
    • The person in this position constantly communicates with internal and external constituents and students. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
    • Cognitive demands include comparing, copying, computing, compiling, analyzing, coordinating, synthesizing, negotiating, communicating, instructing, and interpersonal skills.
    • Occasional exposure to hazardous chemicals, including embalming fluid.

    ADVERTISED SALARY RANGE

    The salary range for this position is $58,569 to $71,185, commensurate with education and experience. This salary is based on 166 contract days within an academic year (August - May). The projected start date for this position is January 1, 2022; salary will be prorated based on the number of contract days worked. This is a full-time, 9-month, FLSA exempt position.     • Help administer project safety program to maintain a safe and healthy work environment
    • Helps provide technical assistance on the project, interprets contract drawings and submittals
    • Assist assistant superintendent, project superintendent, and project manager with daily and weekly tasks including daily reports, daily safety walks, weekly quantity reports, and weekly schedule updates
    • Understand the project schedule and the critical path
    • Review content for the short term plan
    • Participate in the quality program including attending meetings, performing inspections, and verifying materials
