    Job Description

    AECOM is seeking a Structural Engineering Intern to join AECOM Transportation, Structures Departments (Bridge Department) in Chicago, IL.

    This position is expected to begin in May 2025.

    As a Structural Engineering Intern specializing in Bridges, you will work under the supervision of experienced engineers to gain hands-on experience in the design, analysis, and construction of bridge structures. This internship will provide you with exposure to various phases of bridge engineering projects, including planning, design, evaluation, and construction. You will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and contribute to the successful delivery of infrastructure projects.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Design Support : Assist in the preparation of bridge design calculations
    • Structural Analysis : Support the team in performing structural analyses for bridge components using specialized software tools
    • Drafting and Modeling : Help create detailed bridge design drawings and models. This may include drafting in CAD software and updating designs based on feedback from engineers.
    • Fieldwork and Site Visits : Occasionally participate in site visits to observe construction progress, conduct inspections, and support the engineering team in understanding project requirements.
    • Project Documentation : Help prepare and review technical documentation, including reports, specifications, and project updates. Ensure proper documentation and compliance with relevant engineering standards and codes.
    • Collaboration : Work closely with other engineers to support project execution. Participate in design meetings, presentations, and discussions with team members.
    • Quality Control : Support quality assurance processes to ensure that bridge designs meet the required standards, specifications, and safety regulations.

    Minimum Requirements:

    • Candidate must be pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or similar discipline, and must have completed at least 3 years of study. Candidates who have recently graduated with a Bachelor’s degree and plan to continue with the Master’s degree are eligible to apply for these positions. Recent graduates must have been enrolled in their bachelor’s degree in the most previous school term with an interest in pursuing an advanced degree in the same or similar discipline at the conclusion of the internship.=

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
    • Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or MicroStation software.
    • Some basic coursework in steel and concrete design.
    • Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Ability to manage time, deadlines, keep track of steps, and prioritize tasks.
