    JOB DESCRIPTION

    POSITION: Substance Abuse Counselor/Counselor I

    EFFECTIVE DATE: Immediate Need

    TYPE OF POSITION: Part Time

    DURATION: Contingent on funding

    SALARY: D.O.E.

    RESPONSIBILITY: The Substance Abuse Counselor/Counselor I am responsible for providing quality rehabilitative counseling services for Native American clients. Will responsible to complete assessments on assigned clients at entry which includes but not limited to pertinent health data, alcohol/drug history, emotional, cultural, nutritional and social history. Provide progress and discharge summaries outside counselors and court and/or probation officers. Ensure one-on-ones are conducted with clients weekly and progress is documented and revision made so that clients are successful in developing positive behavior modification. Monitor the client’s files for program planning and also to provide documentation of program participation. Communicate the clients special needs to all staff so that they are able to be more effective in their interaction with the clients. To assist staff and Counselor II with all other duties as assigned.

    REQUIREMENT: Certification by CAADAC, NAADAC, IACC, or CAS as a Substance Abuse Counselor I or the ability to obtain certification within one year of hire. Three (3) or more years of sobriety, applicant may be asked to submit to drug testing as a condition of employment. Employment with Native Directions, Inc. may be denied on the basis of a positive drug/alcohol test result. Refusal to be tested will result in denial of employment with this corporation. Applicant must have adequate organizational, written, listening and verbal communication skills. Applicant will be familiar with Native American cultures and demonstrate an understanding of client issues. Applicant must have a valid California Drivers License, proof of adequate insurance, and provide a DMV printout.

    KNOWLEDGE OF: Knowledge of substance abuse services and treatment programs. Be able to demonstrate and an understanding of client issues. The applicant must be familiar with Native American cultures and client issues. Have knowledge of different treatment theories; lead educational alcohol meetings, traditional cultural sessions, 12-step, and motivational meetings or activates such as cultural ceremonies. Must be flexible, have basis math and computer skills. The applicant must have knowledge of Federal and State laws and regulations.

    ABILITY TO: The ability to work independently as an effective team member and meet project deadlines. Applicant must be willing and available to attend and participate in training, seminars, workshops and conferences to further improve their treatment, theories, case management skills, assessment and maintenance of client files. Participate in on-going training to maintain and upgrade required skills, knowledge, and abilities. Occasionally transport clients to appointments. May be required to assume duties of other staff members in their absence and must have the ability to cross train.
