    DESCRIPTION:

    This Substance Abuse Counselor role entails providing substance abuse counseling and education in group and individual settings, with a focus on developing tailored treatment plans and conducting intensive client documentation. The counselor is expected to engage directly with clients or their families, manage case assessments, and facilitate various therapeutic groups. Additionally, the role involves liaison work with referring agencies and community organizations to advocate for client needs.

    Tasks:

    Provides comprehensive substance abuse assessments and develops individualized treatment plans.

    Delivers counseling and educational services to groups and individuals.

    Manages detailed client documentation and reports.

    Facilitates various therapeutic and educational groups.

    Acts as a liaison to advocate for client needs with community organizations and referring agencies.

    Engages in case management, including crisis intervention.

    Maintains professional licensure and certifications.

    Participates in ongoing training and supervision as required.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    SKILLS:

    Manages stress effectively in challenging situations.

    Proficient in case management and client documentation.

    Strong oral and written communication skills.

    Experienced in group and individual counseling.

    Skilled in crisis intervention and treatment plan development.

    Capable of lecturing and giving presentations.

    Maintains confidentiality rigorously.

    Supervises staff as required.

    Competent in typing and word processing.

    KNOWLEDGE OF:

    Funding sources and community resources.

    Counseling interventions and psychotherapy.

    Familiar with computer software and CORE standards.

    Understanding of human development and genogram construction.

    Theoretical approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATION:

    Candidates for LMHP, LMHP-R, LMHP-S, and LMHP-RP roles must possess a Master’s degree in psychology, social work, counseling, or a related field and hold current state licensure as an LMHP, LMHP-R, LMHP-S, or LMHP-RP. Additionally, they should have at least one year of experience in substance abuse counseling. Registration with the Virginia State Licensing board required. 12 VAC 35-105-420.

    For the positions of CSAC and CSAC-S, applicants are required to have a Bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work, or a related field. They must either be certified as a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) or be recognized as a CSAC-supervisee, with a minimum of one year of experience in the field of substance abuse. Registration with the Virginia State Licensing board required. 12 VAC 35-105-420.
