    Position Summary:

    Mt. Gilead Camp and Conference Center is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic individual to serve as our Summer Camp Cook. This vital role is responsible for providing nutritious and appealing meals for our campers and staff while fostering a welcoming and organized dining environment. The Camp Cook oversees all aspects of food service, from menu planning and preparation to maintaining a clean and safe kitchen and dining hall in accordance with state regulations and American Camp Association standards. Beyond culinary duties, the Cook will be an integral part of our camp family, contributing to the spiritual and physical well-being of our campers and mentoring kitchen staff.

    "Summer Staff" Children are also allowed to attend summer camp for free.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Menu Planning & Food Preparation:

    Plan nutritious, kid-friendly menus that accommodate a variety of meal plans, including those with nut and other food allergies.

    Prepare, cook, and serve all meals and snacks on time, ensuring high quality and appealing presentation.

    Prepare alternative menu items as needed for campers and staff with dietary restrictions and allergies.

    Monitor food inventories and prepare timely orders for additional goods, ensuring adequate supplies.

    Work within a set budget, making cost-effective purchasing decisions while minimizing food waste.

    Dining Hall & Kitchen Management:

    Oversee the setup, care, cleaning, upkeep, and organization of the Dining Hall.

    Ensure the kitchen and Dining Hall are consistently clean and comply with all applicable state regulations and American Camp Association standards.

    Maintain cleanliness and organization of dry goods storage, walk-in refrigerator, all other refrigerators and freezers, the kitchen, serving and eating areas, and the trash and recycling area.

    Track all purchasing and other outlays to determine per-meal and per-serving costs.

    Maintain all ordering within budgetary guidelines.

    Keep a daily log of refrigerator and freezer temperatures.

    Staff Leadership & Supervision:

    Provide positive and clear direction to kitchen staff, including assistant cooks, food preparation workers, and dishwashing staff.

    Assign tasks to kitchen crew members based on their abilities and ensure efficient workflow.

    Support and direct kitchen staff in the preparation and cleaning of breakfast, lunch, and dinner set-ups and breakdowns utilizing on-site guidelines and resources.

    Exhibit patience and a willingness to share knowledge and skills with staff who may be unfamiliar with cooking or working in a kitchen.

    Communication & Procurement:

    Manage all communications with food distributors, local stores, and other suppliers.

    Handle all food and dry goods ordering efficiently and accurately.

    Supervise the unloading, organization, and proper storage of all food and supplies.

    Maintain accurate inventory and tracking of dry goods and all food storage areas.

    Camp Community Involvement:

    Be a constructive member of the staff, contributing in every way possible to the health, harmony, and happiness of the camp family group.

    Live and/or work with the campers as a companion and guide, assuming responsibility for their physical and spiritual well-being.

    Strive to make the Dining Hall a safe, inclusive, and FUN environment for all campers.

    Compliance & Safety:

    Become familiar with all applicable State of Pennsylvania Regulations related to food service.

    Ensure appropriate health and safety training is followed by all kitchen staff.

    Maintain a safe working environment in the kitchen and dining hall.

    Availability: Be available to work weekends, weekdays, and nights as required by the camp schedule.

    Required Certification(s):

    None.- Serv Safe Certification is included with the job position.

    Preferred Certification(s):

    Active ServSafe Certificate.

    Appropriate health and safety training.

    Good interpersonal skills and ability to connect well with children.

    Patience with staff unfamiliar with cooking/working in a kitchen.

    Willingness to share culinary knowledge and skills with others.

    Ability to foster a fun and positive atmosphere in the Dining Hall for all campers.
