Qualifications
Candidates must have strong swimming skills (see below) and experience working with children.
Swim Instructor candidates will be evaluated on the following swimming skills:
25 yards front crawl
25 yards back crawl
25 yards breaststroke
25 yards sidestroke
25 yards butterfly
25 yards elementary backstroke
2 minutes of treading water, demonstrating proficiency in eggbeater, whip, and scissor kicks
Candidates are required to attend, and pass, a CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and Administering Emergency Oxygen course and Swim Instructors are required to attend, and pass, a YMCA Swim Lessons Instructor certification course scheduled upon hire.
Essential Functions
This position is for you, if you can:
Provide swimming and water safety instruction to students of all ages and abilities in group and private settings
Plan and implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate, and consistent with YMCA values
Prepare written lesson plan in accordance with YMCA Swim Lessons curriculum
Complete student records and progress reports comprehensively and punctually
Help to create new approaches to serve the needs of program participants
Adhere to program standards, including safety and cleanliness standards, and ensures consistency with evidence-based practices
Model safe behavior in and around the water, know and perform necessary duties in emergency situations
Maintain constant supervision of students, identify students who need assistance, and support students as necessary to ensure a positive learning environment
Provide effective communication with students, parents and co-workers
Maintain positive relationships with parents and caregivers and other staff, model relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions
Demonstrate ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community
Demonstrate ability to be motivators in the areas of self-awareness and self-confidence through aquatics
