Overview:
We are seeking an experienced and strategic Tax Manager to lead our tax department and oversee all tax-related activities within our organization. The Tax Manager will be responsible for ensuring compliance with tax regulations, managing tax planning and strategy development, and providing expert guidance to minimize tax liabilities while optimizing financial outcomes. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of tax laws, strong leadership skills, and a proven track record in managing complex tax issues.
Responsibilities:
Tax Planning and Strategy: Develop and implement tax planning strategies to minimize tax liabilities and optimize financial outcomes for clients. Manage work flow and staff assignments to maximize efficiencies and ensure proper assignment of work to staff with the proper skill level.
Compliance: Ensure the tax staff members are operating in compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations, including timely filing of tax returns and advising clients about their responsibilities to make timely tax payments, if required.
Tax Research and Analysis: Conduct research on tax issues, interpret tax laws and regulations, and provide guidance on their application to business operations and transactions.
Client Advisory: Provide appropriate advice and guidance to clients on tax matters, including strategic tax planning, restructuring client’s retirement options, identify client training or educational needs, and compliance issues.
Tax Notices and Audit Support: Prepare or assist with tax notice responses, audits and inquiries from tax authorities, providing documentation, explanations, and support as requested.
Team Leadership: Supervise and mentor tax department staff, review of staff deliverables, providing training, guidance, and performance feedback to ensure staff members are adhering to tax law and are compliant with the organization’s policies and procedures. Must have versatility to perform client services outside of the tax realm in the “off-season” to meet the client or organization’s needs.
Risk Management: Identify tax-related risks and opportunities, develop risk mitigation strategies, and advise senior management of any known or foreseen issues that need to be addressed.
Relationship Management: Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, staff, and other stakeholders. Keep senior management informed of staffing needs and issues or concerns as any arise.
Continuous Improvement: Stay updated on changes in tax laws and regulations, industry trends, and best practices through continuous learning and professional development. Identify staff or organizational training needs, and make recommendations to senior management of any continuing education opportunities or resources that are available to ensure the staff members and organization are staying updated on compliance standards and changes within the industry.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; Master’s degree in Taxation or CPA preferred. Certification: CPA, EA or other relevant professional certification required. Experience: 3+ years of progressive experience in tax accounting, including at least 2 years in a managerial or supervisory role. Technical Skills: Proficiency in tax preparation software, and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). Leadership Skills: Strong leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to manage and develop a team. Analytical Skills: Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail and accuracy. Communication: Superior verbal and written communication skills to effectively convey complex tax concepts to stakeholders at all levels.
Working Conditions:
Location: Office-based with potential for remote work depending on company policy and client needs. Hours: Full-time position with additional required hours during peak tax season. Travel: Occasional travel may be required for client meetings, audits, or professional development.
