Program/Organizational Description
Our coaches are the heart of our program! As an AmeriCorps Service Year coach at Teens Run DC (TRDC), you will improve the wellbeing of youth by facilitating our running and social-emotional learning program at a middle school in Washington, DC. You will help middle school students set and achieve running and life goals and teach valuable lessons about goal setting, reflection, self-awareness, and mindfulness.
Why TRDC?
Below, our past and current coaches describe their experiences working at TRDC:
“The middle-school students I work with benefit from having after-school structured activities, building their running capabilities, and learning to set goals.”
“I immediately felt part of the team on my first day of work. Although we had a zoom meeting, the TRDC team felt like they were trying to get to know me and help me become the best coach possible, rather than just have a week of onboarding. My supervisors got me excited about working with students and made me want to try my hardest to get the most out of my students and I truly feel like I have done exactly that. I love what I do and I am happy that I get to wake up every day and make a positive difference in someone's life.”
“Our weekly coach PDs were one task that stood out to me the most. Every week there is something to be learned. Each individual topic whether it be learning about leadership, or mental health has equipped myself and I know us as coaches to properly educate the kids on the adversities they will face in life. There were classrooms being held on both sides of the program.”
“I have never witnessed a training curriculum that bridges the foundation of running and the principles of life all into one. Lunch Club has been awesome by capitalizing more so on the education side with SEL guidance, then breaking out into a game to build the teachings of the day. After-school Run Club, I feel gives the kids the discipline to repeat a routine. Stretch, RUN, cool down, reflect, and repeat the next day.”
Member Duties
Half-time (3 days per week)- roughly 20 hours per week, 3 days a week
At Teens Run DC, you will have the rewarding opportunity to connect with local middle school youth to help them achieve their goals and learn social-emotional learning (SEL) skills while creating a sense of community by facilitating our TRDC SEL-based curriculum. Two days per week, you will plan and lead after-school run clubs based on physical activity and SEL and in-school lunch clubs based on SEL. In both clubs, you create a fun and safe community for students and help students set running and life goals, help them achieve their goals, and teach them life skills along the way! On Fridays, coaches meet in person or via Zoom for professional development and program activities before going to a DC school for after-school run club. You will run races and attend infrequent weekend programming (approximately one per quarter) with your students! You will initiate and build relationships with school staff and families. Coaches perform administrative duties related to enrollment forms, attendance, incentives, race registration, and evaluation and can also gain experience in Salesforce, Canva, and SquareSpace.
