    Job Description

    To support our mission, Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) are seeking to fill an Accounts Examiner (AE) III-IV position in the Tax Status Department at 4800 North Lamar, Austin, Texas.

    The half-time Accounts Examiner III-IV performs moderately complex to highly complex (senior-level) accounts examination work.  Work involves assisting and working with Texas employers to ensure compliance with the Texas Unemployment Compensation Act (TUCA). The department determines an employer’s tax rate and how much the employer pays in state Unemployment Insurance taxes.

    The ideal candidate will have good organizational skills with strong attention to detail and the ability to handle multiple priorities while meeting strict deadlines. Therefore, a written exercise may be given at interview stage.

     GENERAL DUTIES:

    • Performs moderately to highly complex tax examination work for the Tax Status department of the Texas Workforce Commission.
    • Verifies and calculates tax rates based on complex formulas for employers subject to the Texas Unemployment Compensation Act (TUCA).
    • Communicates with employers, legislators, and state or federal agencies to provide information regarding the TUCA and other state and federal laws.
    • Identifies, investigates, and analyzes issues; explains tax rate law.
    • Researches highly complex tax assignments and identifies discrepancies.
    • Participates in the training function of the unit.
    • May be required to testify at hearings regarding tax rate issues.
    • May be required to report to executive level staff and to legislative inquires
    • May analyze procedures and recommend changes as necessary.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Excellent skills in math and problem solving.
    • Clear and concise written communication skills.
    • Windows based personal computer programs experience.
    • A good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel. 
    • Knowledge, education, or experience in accounting or auditing.
    • Recent experience as a Tax Accounts Examiner.
    • Experience in providing information about state and/or federal laws.
    • Experience in interpreting the Texas Unemployment Compensation Act.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Accounts Examiner III: Successful completion of 90 semester hours of accredited college work, which included at least 12 semester hours of accounting, mathematics, business administration, or related courses. One year of full-time qualifying experience in maintaining accounting records or performing auditing work may be substituted for each year (30 semester hours) of the required education. One year of full-time in-service experience classified as an Accounts Examiner II with regular status will satisfy the minimum qualifications.

    Accounts Examiner IV: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a minimum of 12 semester hours in accounting, mathematics, business administration, or related courses. A master's degree with an emphasis in accounting, auditing, or business administration will satisfy the minimum requirements. One year of full-time qualifying experience in maintaining accounting records or performing auditing work may be substituted for each year (30 semester hours) of the required education. One year of full-time in-service experience classified as an Accounts Examiner III with regular status will satisfy the minimum qualifications.

    Work may involve travel (up to 10% of time), and method of transportation is the responsibility of the employee, and the ability to lift 15 pounds.

    The salary range for this position is $1,540.67-$2,316.50 per month depending on qualifications.
