The mission of Thayer Leadership is to help build leaders of character by offering leadership and ethics education grounded in the United States Army leadership philosophy of "Be, Know, Do" and the United States Military Academy values of "Duty, Honor, Country," in the inspirational venue of The Historic Thayer Hotel at West Point. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we pivoted to design and deliver our powerful leadership experiences virtually through various platforms to bring our clients the West Point experience from the respective locations at the same time as offering in-person programs.
The role of the Instructional Designer at Thayer Leadership is primarily as support to our faculty and their presentation of Thayer content. They work in partnership with the Business Developer and Program Manager as they review the content taught throughout a program ensuring it meets the objectives of the client in alignment with Thayer’s core content. The instructional designer offers their support to faculty from the beginning of a program until the end. They offer any assistance and knowledge they have for the program’s intent, objectives, and content as well as Thayer’s core content. The Instructional Designer brings their knowledge of adult learning and instructional design theory to the review process to ensure successful learning occurs.
Responsibilities:
- Design, create and edit engaging learning solutions using compelling course content delivery methods
- Tracking program objectives specific to the client
- Train and partner with Faculty/SME to identify instructional end goals and meet participant needs
- Working in partnership with the Business Developer to obtain all necessary client information that is critical to program execution. IE Sanitized proposals, agendas, client intake, any other client details BDs can provide.
- Sending program specific content items to faculty before the program intent call
- Offering any support for content, through digital communication, in person and/or virtual meetings.
- Customizing content where necessary (Online activities, learning journal) while keeping the Thayer way and educational best practices in mind (ALL IDS team members either build and launch courses or at the very least review content)
- Copying experiential presentations to faculty folder for faculty to finalize
- Send client objectives and information to assigned Support Faculty (Observer Controller, Space Force Liaison, Task Force Liaison)
- Tracking presentations received from faculty, sending reminders 48 hours in advance
- Communicating with PM and Products where presentations are in the process.
- Reviewing presentations to ensure they are in alignment with client objectives, the session sold, Thayer standards, and adult education best practices.
- Communicating edits to faculty/working with them to achieve the objectives, giving them the why and suggestions for bettering their presentation
- Be present at tech checks, in person SA meetings for any last-minute questions
- Observe where it is most necessary, track and file observations (IDS are expected to observe at least one session a week)
- Post observation, provide necessary feedback to the faculty regarding the content, discussions, timing, etc.
- Send evaluations within 3 days of the session (the latest 5 days)
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Instructional Design or similar
- 3 years of relevant experience working in instructional design or curriculum development
- Experience with online learning or learning on tech platforms (Blackboard, CorpU, etc.) preferred
- Strong understanding of the use of technology for adult education
- Excellent knowledge of adult learning theories and instructional design models
- Adaptability in a fast-paced, changing environment with multiple priorities and deadlines
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team
- Ability to work with a variety of levels of stakeholders and individuals across the globe
- Comfortable and professional interacting and communicating with faculty and global clients
- Solid written and verbal communication skills and attention to detail
- Strong computer and technology skills: experience with Microsoft Office is required (PowerPoint is used daily in this position - experience and comfort level navigating PowerPoint at a high level is a must)
- Experience in Dropbox, Airtable and Zoom is preferred but not required
