Job Description
The Transplant Medical Assistant reflects the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Memorial, adheres to the organization's Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.
The Transplant Medical Assistant's primary function is to assist and support the Transplant Physicians and Professional Registered Nurse in all aspects of direct and indirect patient care activities. The Medical Assistant functions as a member of the Transplant Clinic staff under the direction and supervision of the Transplant Physician and Professional Registered Nurse, who both may delegate duties as appropriate to their scope of practice.
_ Responsibilities:_
- Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
- Use AIDET in all communications with patients
- Understands and consistently demonstrates principles of Patients First philosophy.
Direct Patient Care:
- Performs phlebotomy in addition to specimen collection (urine, stool, sputum)
- Labels and processes specimens according to established protocols and policies
- Performs bedside waived testing procedures and maintains annual competency
- Take and record accurate vital signs on patients as directed by the RN or MD or per clinic policy
- Escort patients to exam and procedure rooms, have patients disrobe and gown appropriately and/or at physician’s or nurse’s discretion, take appropriate vital signs, set-up procedure trays, and do other appropriate procedures for the physician.
- Assist physicians during treatment, examination and testing of patients.
- Assist patients with scheduling appointments or diagnostic testing.
- Assist the physician in the performance of procedures such as kidney and liver biopsies
- Assist the physician with management of outpatient evaluations, surgeries and follow-up appointments with the MD
- Applies cardiac monitor/pulse oximetry as directed by RN or MD
- Collects and records intake and output as directed
- Reports observations and documents appropriately. Promptly notifies RN or MD of any change in patient condition
- Administers and assists with direct patient care and patient hygiene activities
- Assist patients with limited mobility – including transfer from chair to exam table or bed
- Makes rounds of patients and anticipates their needs
- Answers patient’s call lights promptly
- Applies comfort and safety measures
- Performs duties delegated by the RN to facilitate patient care and the efficient operations of the transplant clinic
- Performs CPR
- Documents in medical record all patient care provided
Clinic Operations/Indirect Care:
- Manage patient flow in the office - keeping physicians timely and prioritize tasks accordingly.
- Transports and/or retrieves patients, specimens, equipment and/or supply as needed
- Assures room readiness for incoming patients.
- Re-stock all exam rooms with necessary supplies throughout the day.
- Stocks and removes linen from patient rooms.
- Maintain exam rooms and procedure rooms during the day
- Obtains necessary equipment and supplies to facilitate patient care.
- Maintains a safe and clean environment. Duties may include: maintaining temperature logs on, defrosting, and cleaning refrigerator, straightening linen, cleaning utility rooms, cleaning IV poles, cleaning scale, cleaning and returning equipment to SPD, replacing and disposing of soiled linen bags.
- Checks designated equipment for proper functioning.
- Counts instruments and sterile trays sent and received from SPD as appropriate for assigned unit.
Transplant Team Responsibilities:
- Participates in staff meetings.
- Demonstrates cost-effective approach to patient care in terms of equipment, supplies and other resource use.
- Participates in clinic huddles
- Participates in orientation of new staff.
- Uses established communication channels to resolve work related problems.
- Assumes responsibility for meeting mandatory requirements.
- Perform other clinical or administrative functions as directed by the MD or RN
Additional Functions:
- In certain situations, the Medical Assistant may be required to cover at different clinic other than his or her usual clinic.
