    JMT is seeking a dynamic and experienced Transportation Engineering Section Head to lead a growing team of traffic and roadway engineers in JMT’s District of Columbia (DC) office. The successful candidate will serve as a technical leader and manager overseeing and ensuring success for a variety of transportation projects and services to clients. The candidate will also serve as principal in business development activities, including identifying and tracking target markets, developing and implementing strategies for pursuits, proposal development, and fostering relationships and new opportunities.

    The successful candidate will be well-versed in Traffic Engineering or Highway Engineering with demonstrated related experience. The successful candidate will effectively oversee and mentor staff and perform, coordinate, and manage a variety of traffic and highway related engineering projects or contract task assignments. Coordination with clients, contractors, outside consultants, government agencies, and project stakeholders is expected.

    Compensation for this position is $85.00 - $110.00/hour, commensurate with experience, education and certifications.

    Essential Functions and Responsibilities

    • Lead and manage the transportation engineering section including for project studies, design, and analysis services to clients.
    • Coordinate strategic growth plan with office managers and practice leaders
    • Establish and grow market presence in the DC and around the DC metropolitan area.
    • Manage financial budget for region/department and allocate resources accordingly
    • Lead and contribute to the production of proposals
    • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to project managers and technical staff
    • Establish resource staffing needs
    • Interview and hire staff for the section and assist with the region
    • Perform performance reviews for staff
    • Oversee the preparation of engineering plans, specifications, and cost estimates.
    • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and standards.
    • Coordinate with other departments, clients, and stakeholders to ensure project success.

    Required Skills

    • In-depth knowledge of transportation engineering principles, including highway design, traffic engineering, and infrastructure development; knowledge of
    • Knowledge of infrastructure design software tools.
    • Knowledge of local engineering standards, policies and practices.
    • Knowledge in design and plan preparation, and various applicable traffic/highway engineering software tools.
    • Proficiency in planning, executing, and overseeing projects, including managing budgets, timelines, and resources.
    • Ability to lead, motivate, and manage a team of engineers while fostering a collaborative and productive work environment.
    • Excellent written and oral communications
    • Skill in building and maintaining relationships (internal and external) and collaborating with others.

    Required Experience

    • Minimum 15 years of relevant experience in transportation engineering.
    • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field from ABET accredited engineering program.
    • DC Registered Professional Engineer.
    • Experience working with the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), preferably, or other nearby agencies.

    Working Conditions

    Work is performed in an office environment with a mix of designated, shared and hoteling workspace. Office includes a mix of natural and artificial light and climate control. Each employee has access to necessary equipment including laptop computers, and access to phones, printers, and other office equipment and supplies.
