    CHIEF IMPACT OFFICER (CIO)

    CIO will play a primary role in building an inclusive organizational culture ensuring team members thrive and organizational outcomes are met. They will lead the implementation of internal activities and services that address community problems. This role is intended to create and lead United Way’s efforts to achieve strategic, measurable community impact and systems change. The CIO is responsible for an effective system of community planning, resource investment and partner/community relations to deliver a dynamic response to changing community conditions. The CIO plays a key role in positioning UWFC as a catalyst, convener and collaborator in Collective Impact ventures and is a visible presence in the community.

     

    OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES COMMUNITY IMPACT & PARTNERSHIPS

    •   Set overall Community Investment strategy. Oversee the execution of United Way of Forsyth County’s annual community investment portfolio and grantmaking processes. Ensure community investment portfolio targets and organizational community impact measures are met or exceeded, while all partners have a strong user experience in the process.

    •   Lead development, implementation, and evaluation of UWFC’s community impact strategy to maximize investments and achieve outcome metrics in accordance with the organizational strategic plan.

    •   Serve as a thought leader able to share trends internally and externally on community development and investment strategies, promising programs, and solutions locally and beyond.

    •  Mobilize and engage the following stakeholders in sustained collaborative relationships to maximize

    UWFC’s impact and accomplish shared goals:

    ➢  Funded partners

    ➢  Other human service and non-profit agencies

    ➢  Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School District

    ➢  Government agencies/departments

    ➢  Other community funders

    ➢  Healthcare providers

    ➢  Faith-based institutions and other stakeholders

     

    •   Work collaboratively with the CEO, executive team, and various public, private, and philanthropic partners to develop smart, sustainable solutions to some of our community’s most pressing challenges.

    •   Oversee and provide direction to grants acquisition staff to ensure UWFC secures resources needed for programming and general operations.

    •   Develop and implement strategies to integrate an equity lens into UWFC community work, culture, systems, and strategic plan, in partnership with the CEO and Board Equity Committee.

    •   Integrate research, quantitative goals, evaluation, and data analysis into all aspects of Impact work to determine community needs, track progress, evaluate progress and hold all parties accountable for results. Understands how to interpret information and data to make good decisions.

    •   Partner with Director of Impact Programs to build community solutions that allow individuals and corporations to make a defined difference in the community through significant, multi-year gifts or endowments that extend the mission of UWFC. Demonstrate understanding of UWFC resource development strategy.

    •   Lead, develop and delegate to team of professionals that includes Executive Director – Housing Matters, Director – Partnership for Prosperity, Director – Grants Acquisition & Impact Director – Place Matters, and to achieve UWFC community impact goals. Seek learning and training opportunities to enhance staff development and learning.

    •  Serve as member of and partner with community advisory boards of collective impact initiatives.

    Represent UWFC interests and provide strong leadership to ensure that initiative directors are meeting goals.

    •   Develop and manage CPI and Allocation budgets to be sure spending is within budget limits and that maximum effectiveness is obtained with each investment.

    •   Contribute as a member of the Leadership Team to provide a united leadership presence across the organization, help instill new thinking, prioritize efforts, and help to operationalize UWFC strategic

    plan.

    •   Serve as a strong collaborator with all functional areas and demonstrate an understanding of the fact that each function is dependent on other areas of the organization.

    •   Provide leadership and expertise to the Community Investment Cabinet and subcommittees in partnership with the Community Investment Cabinet Chair.

    •   Supports annual campaign and other fundraising by seeking stories of impact on a consistent basis and assisting with preparation of speakers for UWFC.

    •  Provide leadership for Public Policy and advocacy issues and activities.

    •  Lead special projects and perform other duties as assigned by the UWFC President & CEO.

     

    TEAM & BUDGET MANAGEMENT:

    •  Lead the Community Impact team and oversee the creation of community impact strategies as well

    as annual operational plans for the community impact team in alignment with the organization’s

    Strategic Vision.

    •   Develop a high-performance team culture focused on leadership and accountability at all levels, continuous learning, collaboration, measurement, coaching and goal achievement.

    •   Ensure that processes, procedures, and assignments of responsibilities are designed to meet team goals in an efficient, optimal, and effective manner.

    •   Create and monitor the Community Impact team budget. Work collaboratively with the leadership team in creating the organization’s overall budget by providing accurate information and the best forecasts possible.

    •   Collaborate with members of the Leadership Team and other organizational leaders to identify and implement appropriate operational strategies.

    •   Ensure all organizational activities and operations are carried out in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. Cultivate meaningful and productive relationships between United Way and all stakeholders including a diverse community of donors and partners.

     

    EXTERNAL STAKEHOLDER RELATIONS

    •   Represent United Way at events, including speaking opportunities, panel discussions, or media requests at the direction of CEO.

    •  Serve as the primary liaison to community partners.

    •  Champion the cause and values of United Way throughout the community.

     

    PROFESSIONAL & LEADERSHIP COMPETENCIES:

    •   The CIO must be a strategic thinker who is both achievement and team-oriented, collaborative in all aspects of the work.

    •   The CIO must have experience managing hybrid workers to ensure engagement and best performance.

    •   The CIO must be focused on results rather than process; comfortable with setting and being measured against targets

    •  Understand Collective Impact framework and use as core foundation for impact work.

    •   Solid record of working with volunteers and collaborating with both the business and nonprofit communities

    •   Exhibit curiosity and innovation for continuous improvement; seek and share research and studies to further organizational learning about impact work

    •   Strong interpersonal skills; value individual differences to generate best possible work from each colleague.

     

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    •  Bachelor’s Degree required; Masters preferred

    •  8-10 years of United Way, non-profit or equivalent experience in a leadership role. Familiarity with

    Forsyth County non-profit landscape strongly preferred.

    •  Manage and monitor budgets, grant compliance, data analysis and other financial oversight.

    •   Strong performance management and evaluation capabilities including the willingness and ability to ensure accountability.

    •   Ability to build strong relationships both inside and outside UWFC, to think strategically, and to foster an inclusive environment consistent with UWFC’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.

    •  Must have the ability to prepare, explain, and monitor performance.

    •  Experience hiring, motivating, and supervising staff

    •   Experience in all aspects of grants: identifying opportunities, applications, management, and reporting.

    •   Experience developing and implementing community collaborations and working in partnership with other individuals and organizations.

    •   Experience using qualitative and quantitative analysis as well as partnering with others on community-based research and evaluation methods/tools.

    •   Project management skills: ability to multitask, problem-solve, prioritize, delegate, and create systems and processes, work independently, manage time effectively and follow through.

    •  Ability to operate in an ambiguous and changing environment.

    •   Proficiency with Microsoft Office package (Outlook/Word/Excel/PowerPoint). Comfort with learning other electronic tools.

    •  Must have valid NC driver’s license, acceptable driving record and own transportation.
