ABOUT UNITED FOR RESPECT
United for Respect (UFR) is a national non-profit organization building an industry voice of working people working for the country’s largest retail corporations. Through scaled leadership development and base-building, UFR’s growing network is challenging major corporations and policymakers to provide family-sustaining jobs for all working people. We leverage technology — social media and our digital platform, WorkIt — to bring the retail workforce into a shared community of support and advocacy.
ABOUT THE POSITION
United for Respect is seeking a Political Organizer to join our Policy and Politics Department. The Political Organizer will help build political power with people working in low wage retail jobs through advocacy campaigns for economic and racial justice, and a robust civic engagement program. This is a national position with a focus on building UFR’s political relationships and strategies in our southern states.
WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING:
- IMPLEMENT POLITICAL PROGRAM: Support the Director of Policy and Politics and Deputy Political Director in building a long term political program where people working in low wage jobs see UFR as their political home and as a vehicle to influence government and elections using targeting and analysis of strategic sites of political intervention.
- CULTIVATE POLITICAL RELATIONSHIPS: Build and nurture relationships with elected officials in UFR’s target southern states and localities. Build partnerships with politically aligned organizations and participate in state and local coalitions whose work is relevant to UFR’s goals.
- SUPPORT CORPORATE ACCOUNTABILITY CAMPAIGNS: Collaborate across teams to leverage political and community relationships in support of worker demands of their employers.
- LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT: Assist the Director of Policy and Politics and Deputy Political Director in developing and implementing a political education program as part of leadership development for our national and state policy campaigns.
- CIVIC ENGAGEMENT: In collaboration with the Deputy Political Director, develop electoral infrastructure that includes candidate endorsements and voter registration and turnout, centering issues of importance to retail workers and involving UFR members in the process.
WHAT YOU WILL BRING:
- A high level of motivation and passion for transforming the lives of working people in retail and in low-wage jobs.
- At least 2 years of experience in political and/or electoral organizing, e.g. political organizing, policy and legislative campaigns, electoral campaigns or political programmatic work.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills, ability to empathize, connect and work with people who work in low-wage jobs from diverse backgrounds.
- Strong strategic development skills, specifically the ability to understand political strategy, policy and develop campaign plans on how to amplify these issues.
- Strong political engagement skills, specifically the ability to navigate relationships with elected officials and political organizations to deliver new opportunities for our members.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and problem solve.
- Ability to work well under pressure and manage time efficiently.
- Ability to work occasional nights and weekends.
- Comfort with a remote work culture and working across and managing staff in different time zones.
- A demonstrated commitment to social and racial justice issues and understanding of challenges facing immigrant communities, communities of color, and low-and moderate-income families.
- Ability to travel frequently for work.
- Other duties as assigned.
SALARY RANGE: $70,000 - $75,000 annually depending on experience and location.
BENEFITS: Competitive benefits package provided for full-time employees and eligible dependents, including health, dental, vision, and prescription coverage and 401k.
