This role is an opportunity to learn and contribute to the design process, from concept development to execution. The intern will work closely with production designers, associate designers, and the props and costume teams, developing skills in design, drafting, and creative problem-solving.

    • Design Support: * Assist in the creation of scenic, prop, and costume designs by developing sketches, mood boards, and conceptual renderings. * Participate in brainstorming sessions to ideate creative solutions and enhance the storytelling of production designs. * Research materials, reference imagery, and design trends to inform and support design concepts. * Draft scenic elements, props, or set pieces using AutoCAD or similar software under the supervision of the design team. * Collaborate on graphic design needs to develop signage or other visual elements needed for various projects.
    • Technical Support: * Assist in the preparation of technical drawings, floor plans, and elevations for scenic and set designs. * Create 3D models or mock-ups of design elements using software such as SketchUp, Rhino, or other visualization tools. * Organize and update design packets for presentations, ensuring they meet internal and external partner expectations. * Support the creation and organization of design specifications, ensuring accurate communication with fabricators and vendors.
    • Project Coordination: * Work closely with the production design team to maintain and update project trackers, timelines, and design deliverables. * Assist in coordinating design revisions based on feedback from internal reviews, creative leads, or IP partners. * Manage the organization of digital files and physical materials, ensuring they are accessible for current and future use. * Shadow meetings with external vendors to understand how designs are translated into physical builds.
    • Onsite Assistance: * Observe and support designers during site visits, installations, and rehearsals to gain insight into the execution phase of projects. * Provide hands-on assistance with prop placements, scenic touch-ups, or set dressing during onsite installations. * Document the progress of installations through photographs and notes for project records. * Act as a liaison between the design team and other departments to address any immediate design needs onsite.
    • Collaboration: * Work with the Props & Placemaking team to assist in prop creation, painting, and finishing. * Support the Costume Design team with fabric swatches, costume alterations, or organization of wardrobe assets. * Collaborate with the creative team to align design elements across scenic, costume, and props for a cohesive vision. * Communicate with other departments, such as production or technical teams, to ensure alignment on project needs and deadlines.
    • Personal Project: * Develop and execute an independent project that aligns with department goals, allowing the intern to apply skills learned during the internship. * Identify a project focus with mentorship from the design team, leaning into personal strengths while exploring areas for growth and development. * Present project concepts and progress to the production design team for feedback and refinement. * Deliver a completed project or prototype by the end of the internship, showcasing skills in design, collaboration, and problem-solving. * Reflect on the project experience to assess personal growth and gain insight into career pathways within production design.
