    Vermejo Park Ranch Profile

    Vermejo Park Ranch, a remote 585,000-acre ranch in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado, is seeking an Assistant General Manager to facilitate ranch operations, including Natural Resources, Bison, Heavy Equipment, Maintenance, and Land/Administration and coordinating those operations with Vermejo’s Hospitality Division.

    Vermejo Park is one of the largest privately-owned ranches in North America; its modern history as a ranch originates with the Beaubien and Miranda Land Grant of 1841. The Ranch is well-known for its trophy big game hunting, fishing, adventure and nature tourism, natural resources restoration, sustainable forestry, bison production, coalbed natural gas production, and endangered species restoration. Vermejo has operated as a premier destination for fishing and hunting for over 100 years and has a developing nature tourism venue. The Assistant General Manager will work with the Vermejo Team to further the goal of economic sustainability and environmental sensitivity.

    Position Summary

    Direct report to General Manager, Vermejo Park Ranch.

    Facilitating daily ranch operations for the following Vermejo Park Ranch divisions: Bison, Heavy Equipment, Maintenance, Natural Resources (Environmental, Forestry, Wildlife and Hunting), and Land (Ranch Administration).

    Coordinating Ranch operations with Vermejo Hospitality (a Ted Turner Expeditions destination).

    Coordinating and finalizing Division budgets with the General Manager.

    Oversight of the Vermejo Capital Budget ($1.0–2.5M) and multiple Capital Projects annually.

    Writing and administration of Independent Contractor Agreements.

    Administration of land and grazing agreements.

    Managing of multiple projects that fall outside the normal responsibilities of the Ranch’s Divisions.

    Facilitating, with the General Manager, “Working on The Business” (WOTB) sessions – annually for each Vermejo Division.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    Support the General Manager on: HR issues; contractual issues; community; neighbor; county; state; issues regarding Vermejo Park Ranch; as needed or requested.

    A central team player in the Vermejo management group, working with other team members on facilitating operations across Vermejo Park Ranch.

    Supporting the Vermejo Administration office as needed with record-keeping and reporting.

    Assist the General Manager with annual employee reviews for Division Managers.

    Will serve on hiring committees for Vermejo Division manager positions and other Vermejo staff as requested by the General Manager.

    Mentoring and training of less experienced division managers.

    Assisting Vermejo division managers in short and long-term planning for their divisions.

    Shared review and approval of accounts payable with the General Manager.

    Willingness to serve on the Vermejo Park/Colfax County District 7 Fire Department in Structural Fighting or EMS role.

    Willingness to serve as a Wildland Firefighter for Prescribed Burns and Wildlife Suppression.

    Position will require a flexible schedule including weekends and holidays as needed.

    Other duties, projects or assignments from the General Manager as necessary.

    Qualifications

    Minimum education: Undergraduate degree in resource management, business, agriculture or related field required, master’s degree preferred.

    Minimum experience: 5 years directly-related experience, including budgetary responsibilities, and leadership and supervision of operational programs that demonstrate an ability to establish and perpetuate a positive team effort.

    Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Successful applicants must possess a valid New Mexico Driver’s license or be able to obtain one within 30 days of employment. Driving record must meet the eligibility requirements of the TEI liability carrier. Employee will be required to sign a confidentiality statement and undergo a background check.

    General Knowledge: Natural resources, wildlife, guest services, bison, coal bed natural gas production, contracts, regulatory agencies, politics, computers, and spreadsheets.

    Living Conditions: Vermejo Park Ranch is remote, located 40 miles west of Raton, NM on Highway 555, a town of 7,000 people. Ranch headquarters is located at 7600’ elevation on the east slope of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and enjoys a generally temperate climate, though winters will see sub-zero weather, and summers can occasionally climb to the mid-90’s. Basic services (medical, dental, banking, vehicle repairs, shopping, etc.) are available in Raton. Many times, such services require trips to Trinidad, Pueblo, or Colorado Springs, Colorado, or Santa Fe or Albuquerque, New Mexico. Stocking up on food and supplies is recommended, especially during the winter months. Schools from kindergarten through high school are located in Cimarron, and weekday school bus service is provided during the school year, though it means a long day for school children. Ranch headquarters is a small community of approximately 30 families that comprises the majority of daily social life.
