    PositionOverview:

    We are seeking highly motivated and enthusiastic veterinarystudents to join the Heritage Veterinary Team as externs/preceptors. Thisopportunity is designed for students who have completed their third or fourthyear of veterinary school (VM3-4) and are looking to gain livestock ormixed-animal practical experience in a rural clinical setting. As anextern/preceptor, you will work closely with our experienced veterinarians andstaff to expand your veterinary knowledge and skills in a hands-on environment.

    Heritage Vet Partners has practices in many states(IA/IN/MN/MO/OH/NE/VA/WV/WI) offering a variety of large and companion animalservices. Duration usually lasts 2-12 weeks but can be customized based onavailability.

    Responsibilities:

    1. AssistingVeterinarians: Under the supervision of our veterinarians, you will be activelyinvolved in clinical activities, including but not limited to:

    - Conducting physical examinations and/or herd checks on animals(including bovine palpation and other chute-side procedures)- Collaborating with consulting veterinarians on herd health managementand production.

    - Assisting with diagnostic procedures such as blood tests,radiography, and ultrasound.

    - Preparing and administering medications as prescribed.

    - Assisting in surgical procedures and monitoring anesthesia.

    - Providing post-operative care and monitoring patient recovery.

    2. Patient Care: You will play an active role in providingprofessional and compassionate care to our herds/patients by:

    - Evaluating and managing patient cases.

    - Assisting with patient processing, restraint and handling.

    - Ensuring proper documentation of patient records and treatmentplans.

    - Communicating with livestock/pet owners about conditions andtreatment options.

    3. Collaborating with the Healthcare Team: You will work closelywith our veterinarians, technicians, and support staff to provide comprehensiveveterinary care by:

    - Participating in team meetings to discuss herd/patient casesand treatment plans.

    - Assisting technicians with various procedures as needed.

    - Maintaining a clean and organized work environment.

    4. Continuing Education: We value continuous learning andencourage you to actively participate in:

    - Journal clubs, rounds, and continuing education eventsprovided by our clinic.

    - Discussing challenging cases with our veterinarians to deepenyour understanding.

    5. Adhering to Clinic Policies: You must comply with all clinicprotocols, including:

    - Following standard operating procedures and best practices.

    - Maintaining patient confidentiality and ensuring ethicalstandards are upheld.

    - Practicing proper biosecurity and infection control.

    Qualifications:

    - Currently enrolled in a veterinary school and completed atleast two years of study (VM3-4).

    - Demonstrated passion for large or mixed-animal veterinarymedicine and a strong desire to learn.

    - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills toeffectively interact with colleagues and clients.

    - Ability to work well in a team, follow instructions, and takeinitiative when appropriate.

    - Strong organizational skills to manage caseload and prioritizetasks efficiently.

    - Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings,weekends, and holidays.

    - Adherence to professional and ethical standards in all aspectsof veterinary care.
