    Job Description

    POSITION SUMMARY

    The Volunteer Coordinator ensures an excellent experience for individuals who volunteer in support of the mission of Feeding San Diego. This is accomplished by ensuring a positive experience for all volunteers through proper support, instruction, and supervision throughout their Food Sorting volunteer shifts. Imperative to this role is a positive attitude, strong interpersonal communication skills, and the ability to interact with individuals from various backgrounds. Providing fulfilling volunteer experiences strengthens relationships and provides opportunities to share our mission and deepen the connection to Feeding San Diego.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    The following duties and responsibilities are those considered to be essential but do not represent all the job functions that may be required to be performed by this position. Other comparable duties and responsibilities may be assigned as needed. Occasional evening or weekend work is required as a condition of employment.

    Volunteer Engagement

    • Develop strong relationships within the community to foster a positive image that leads companies and individuals to make Feeding San Diego the volunteer organization of choice.
    • Act as liaison between Feeding San Diego staff and volunteers
    • Supervise and train volunteer groups as needed to attain organization and team goals
    • Establish and maintain exemplary interactions with volunteers, donors, partner organizations, vendors, and coworkers.
    • Ensure all volunteers have an engaging, productive, safe, and fun volunteer shift.
    • Communicate with volunteers, staff, and community partners to encourage donations of time, funds, and voice.
    • Greet volunteer groups and individuals, utilizing current FSD talking points, providing an overview of safety, including food safety, and scheduled project of the day.
    • Guide volunteers through the scheduled project and support volunteers through provision of necessary supplies and answer questions throughout the shift.
    • Ensure the project meets the scheduled group size; adjust as necessary in consultation with Senior Volunteer Coordinator
    • For each group:
      • Provide an estimate of pounds and meals worked during shift.
      • Educate groups on process and encourage individuals to return as recurring volunteers.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Volunteer Project Logistics

    • Set up, coordinate, and clean up assigned volunteer projects.
    • Speak to large groups, give tours, and train/engage with volunteers during the volunteer project.
    • Work with the Operations Department team to ensure timely and accurate project completion.
    • Partner with Operations Department team to ensure smooth product flow.
    • Ensure all volunteer areas are compliant with Feeding San Diego Standard Operating Procedures.
    • Ensure all volunteer areas are compliant with FDA cGMP and OSHA standards and Feeding San Diego Standard Operating Procedures for personal safety, food safety, and cleanliness at the end of each volunteer shift.
    • Demonstrate ownership for project room process improvement.
    • Other duties as assigned

    INTERACTION

    This position will interact closely with individuals from the Operations and Programs departments. This position also requires frequent interaction with all FSD staff and volunteers of our community.

    EDUCATION/YEARS EXPERIENCE

    Required

    • Demonstrated success training, organizing, or coaching large groups in a specific skill (or equivalent)
    • Basic level computer skills: email, internet search engines, word processing, and spreadsheet software
    • High school graduate or GED

    Preferred

    • Bachelor’s degree
    • Food Safety training
    • Electric pallet jack experience
    • Previous experience working in the nonprofit sector
    • Previous experience working with the community

    Any combination of education and work experience that would be equivalent to the stated minimum requirements would qualify for consideration for this position.

    TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

    Electric pallet jack, forklift, manual pallet jack, dolly, computer, copier, printer

    LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

    Must have reliable transportation and possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license, a satisfactory driving record, including proof of personal vehicle insurance coverage and insurability under the Agency’s insurance carrier standards.

    Must be able to obtain and keep a forklift and electric pallet jack certification. Training will be provided.

    PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that an employee will be asked to successfully perform to fulfill the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly expected to:

    • Perform work in an office and warehouse space housing warehouse operations, which may occasionally create an exposure to dust and pollens
    • Must be able to remain in a stationary position for prolonged periods of time as well as frequently transport objects between floors. May transport objects weighing up to 30 pounds
    • Pull and push such objects as file drawers and supplies
    • Prioritize and multi-task work and projects requiring good memory, concentration and analytical thinking
    • Occasionally it is required to perform the safe operation office equipment and machines, and recognize and abate safety hazards within the workplace
    • Must be able to hear, see including peripheral vision and distinction of colors, read and communicate verbally and in writing frequently with a wide range of people from divergent socio-economic and cultural backgrounds and origins
    • The noise level in the work environment varies and can be considered moderate.

    PAY & HOURS

    $22 - $23.50 per hour

    FSD Distribution Center Tuesday-Saturday, 7am-3:30pm, 8am-4:30pm, 12pm-8:30pm
