Volunteer Social Media Communications Assistant
Position Summary
The Volunteer Social Media Communications Assistant provides vital support to the Creative Manager (CM) and the Executive Operations Officer (EOO) by assisting with social media content across NMMF platforms. This role plays a key part in amplifying the NMMF’s science and conservation efforts, engaging the public to foster understanding and awareness of critical marine mammal initiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities
Supports the CM and EOO with social media content creation, scheduling, posting, and engagement across all three NMMF platforms (Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn)
Tags appropriate partners, add follow-up links, and monitor comments, messages, tags and mentions
Collaborates with team members on copywriting, drafting, and reviewing social media posts for marine mammal science and conservation stories, fundraising campaigns, press releases, and community events
Promotes fundraising and community events by developing and implementing promotional timelines and attending events to collect content as needed
Creates and maintains a social media content calendar to ensure consistent messaging and timely delivery of content
Responds to comments and messages to foster meaningful connections with followers while aligning with the NMMF’s mission
Maintains and updates the NMMF’s social media profiles on all platforms
Assists in monitoring and analyzing social media performance metrics to assess effectiveness and recommend improvements
Monitors social media trends and recommends innovative strategies to increase reach and engagement
Creates, formats, and edits professional correspondence with minimal oversight
Manages incoming communications and ensures timely response
Follows up on various tasking and activities to ensure closure, completion, and deadlines are being met
Performs additional duties as requested by the CM and EOO

Ability to work independently with minimal oversight and as part of a collaborative team
Professionalism and discretion at all levels of tasking and communication
Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Drive, and Sites)
Preference will be given to applicants who have experience in a similar role, ideally in the field of conservation, science, or medicine
Technical proficiency with social media platforms, specifically Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn required
Basic graphic design, web design, video editing, and web-based media
Experience or willingness to learn Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, and social media publishing platforms
Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to apply
Time Commitment
This is a volunteer role with an expected time commitment of 5 to 15 hrs per week. Preference will be given to candidates located in San Diego and able to check in at the Shelter Island office and attend events as needed. The volunteer and the CM and EOO will establish a regular schedule based on NMMF needs and volunteer availability.
