Job Description: Hydronics Welder
A Hydronics Welder is a skilled professional who specializes in welding and fabricating metal piping systems specifically designed for hydronic heating and cooling systems. Hydronic systems utilize water or other fluids to transfer heat and are commonly used in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings for heating, cooling, and even for processes that require temperature control. This role requires expertise in various welding techniques (such as MIG, TIG, and Stick welding) to ensure precise, leak-free connections and durable systems.
Key Responsibilities:
- Welding & Fabrication:
- Perform welding operations on various metals (steel, stainless steel, copper, etc.) to fabricate piping and components for hydronic systems
- Use a variety of welding methods (MIG, TIG, Stick) to join pipes, fittings, valves, and other parts as required by the project.
- Fabricate and assemble custom piping systems according to project specifications, drawings, and blueprint
- Hydronic System Installation:
- Work with the installation team to lay out and install hydronic heating and cooling systems, including radiant floor heating, baseboard heating, and other hydronic components
- Ensure all welds are secure, leak-free, and meet industry codes and safety standards
- Install boilers, manifolds, circulators, and other components of hydronic systems
- Blueprint & Technical Drawing Interpretation:
- Read and interpret blueprints, technical diagrams, and system schematics to ensure proper alignment and installation of components
- Measure, cut, and thread piping to match the dimensions and specifications indicated in the drawings
- Quality Control & Inspection:
- Inspect completed welds and piping for quality, ensuring they meet project requirements and industry standards
- Perform pressure tests on the systems to check for leaks and ensure the integrity of all connections
- Repair or replace faulty welds or components when needed
- System Troubleshooting:
- Diagnose issues with existing hydronic systems, such as leaks, blockages, or system malfunctions
- Provide solutions by repairing or replacing damaged components and testing the system for optimal performance
- Safety & Compliance:
- Follow strict safety procedures and use personal protective equipment (PPE) such as welding helmets, gloves, and face shields to prevent injuries
- Adhere to safety regulations and building codes for the installation and welding of hydronic system
- Maintain a clean and organized work area to minimize hazards
- Collaboration with Other Trades:
- Work closely with other tradespeople (e.g., plumbers, HVAC technicians, electricians) to ensure the timely and accurate installation of hydronic systems
- Communicate effectively with project managers, supervisors, and team members to meet deadlines and resolve any on-site issues
- Equipment Maintenance & Use:
- Operate and maintain welding equipment, tools, and other machinery used in the fabrication and installation of hydronic systems
- Ensure welding equipment is properly set up, calibrated, and maintained for optimal performance
- Documentation:
- Keep accurate records of work completed, including materials used and any changes to the original plans
- Report any issues or delays to supervisors promptly to ensure project timelines are met
Qualifications:
- Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; completion of a formal welding apprenticeship program is preferred
- Previous experience in welding, specifically in hydronics or plumbing systems, is highly desirable
- Certifications such as AWS (American Welding Society) certification or other welding credentials are preferred
- Skills & Knowledge:
- Proficiency in welding techniques, including MIG, TIG, and Stick welding
- Knowledge of hydronic heating and cooling systems, including boilers, radiators, piping, and manifolds
