Welding Engineer
Minnetonka, MN | Direct-Hire | $90,000-$120,000 | Hybrid
Konik is working with a local manufacturing client that is looking to add a Welding Engineer to develop, implement, and maintain their in-house fabrication welding procedures and qualification records for manufacturing operations. This role requires close collaboration with Project Engineers, Quality Control, Manufacturing, and Sales teams to ensure compliance with industry codes and customer specifications. The successful candidate will provide expert guidance on welding techniques, troubleshoot fabrication challenges, and drive process improvements in both in-house and subcontractor welding operations.
Welding Engineer Responsibilities:
- Interpret and analyze customer welding, fabrication, and material specifications, along with applicable industry codes, to pinpoint non-standard requirements early in the quoting process. Assist sales in evaluating the cost of compliance.
- Oversee and evaluate welding procedure qualification tests to ensure adherence to regulatory and client standards; create and refine testing protocols and documentation as needed.
- Develop, maintain, and update welding procedure specifications (WPS) and procedure qualification records (PQR) to align with evolving project needs.
- Provide expertise in ASME Codes, assisting engineering, manufacturing, and purchasing teams in meeting compliance requirements.
- Advise on materials selection and fabrication considerations, particularly with new or customer-specified materials, ensuring weldability and structural integrity.
- Support Quality Control and Manufacturing teams by helping establish work instructions, shop welding standards, and best practices.
- Lead failure analyses by working directly with metallurgical consultants or reviewing customer-provided reports to determine root causes and recommend corrective actions.
- Maintain an up-to-date database of welding procedures, performance qualifications, and welder certifications, ensuring full compliance with ASME Code and internal requirements.
- Administer welder qualification programs, including conducting qualification tests, issuing welder stamps, monitoring continuity logs, and maintaining records.
Welding Engineer Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
- Extensive experience managing large-scale, technically complex engineering projects involving welding and fabrication.
- Deep knowledge of high-temperature steam equipment manufacturing, including ancillary systems such as pumps, burners, and fans.
- Strong metallurgical foundation (expertise in material behavior and weldability is a plus).
- Hands-on proficiency in multiple welding techniques, including SAW, SMAW, GTAW, FCAW, and GMAW across carbon steel, alloy steel, and stainless steel.
- Advanced understanding of ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (Sections I, VIII, and IX) as well as familiarity with AWS (American Welding Society) and CWB (Canadian Welding Bureau) standards.
- Ability to pass a CWB review of welding engineering qualifications for company certification.
- Strong analytical mindset with the ability to evaluate technical specifications, troubleshoot welding issues and drive effective solutions.
