SUMMARY:
The Pathology Technical Assistant supports the pathology department and clients by performing tasks determined by specific site location. Provides information about specimen collection requirements, accessioning, available services, and general assistance to customers and department pathologists. Understands and abides by patient confidentiality regulations.
PURPOSE:
The purpose of this document is to describe the general nature and level of work performed by personnel as classified; it is not intended to serve as an inclusive list of all responsibility associated with this position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
Maintains up-to-date knowledge of and adheres to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Performs clerical functions to include answering the phone, filing/record maintenance and temperature logs; provides support for department through computer programs. Uploads gross photos into CoPath.
Contacts physicians offices and/or physicians to obtain missing information needed to accomplish accurate processing and billing.
Ensures accurate delivery of specimens to the appropriate department.
Accessions specimens received in the gross room; handles specific send-out specimens; creates pure tumor blocks and stain bone marrow slides.
Retrieves specimens from the operating room (OR) and other locations.
Performs specimen handling duties, to include: handling of fresh specimens, adding formalin to specimens, scanning specimens to storage and disposal of specimens.
Performs frozen section duties, to include: making and staining frozen section slides, procuring patient history and separating or faxing frozen requisitions to transcription.
Produces work with minimal data entry errors.
Ensures designated area is clean and organized; maintains departmental supplies.
Performs instrument maintenance and upkeep, to include: cleaning crytostats, changing stains and chemicals and troubleshooting issues with gross room equipment while documenting appropriate daily/weekly/monthly maintenance and stain/chemical changes
Maintains work assignments, exhibits flexibility and communicates ongoing outstanding issues with other members of the department.
Accepts additional responsibilities during staffing shortages.

Education/Experience:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); prior experience in a gross room setting is not required but is preferred. Knowledge of medical terminology/human anatomy and data processing desirable.
Language Ability:
Must be able to read, write, speak and comprehend the English language.
Math Ability:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to work independently; demonstrate initiative and analytical ability; and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. Possess strong attention to detail, and highly organized. Demonstrate the ability to work with minimal supervision and direction. Ability to work well in a fast-paced professional office and laboratory environment.
Computer Skills:
Ability to use Laboratory Information System in addition to various other software programs
