    The YELLS Afterschool Program is sponsored by Youth Empowerment through Learning, Leading, and Serving, Inc. We provide a safe haven for youth (K – 5th grade) in the students’ own Franklin Road neighborhood while empowering them with the skills, resources, and character they need to serve as effective leaders and members of their community.

    The role of the Leadership Instructor is to directly support the implementation of the YELLS Afterschool Program by assisting the Lead Teacher / Program Coordinator in coordinating and facilitating various activities that promote positive personal development, academic success, healthy and safe lifestyles, and community involvement for elementary school-aged youth. The Leadership Instructor will specifically focus on planning and facilitating leadership workshops and character-building enrichment activities.

    Essential Duties and Functions

    Work under the supervision of the Lead Teacher / Program Coordinator and assist in daily operations

    Plan, lead, and facilitate active and highly engaging educational, recreational, leadership, and enrichment activities for youth

    Ensure youth have FUN while growing as young, caring leaders

    Design and implement service-learning activities that empower youth to direct and enact service and community-- building initiatives

    Develop leadership and character-building curriculum to align with organizational mission and thematic unit

    Build the confidence of YELLS youth to overcome challenges and achieve success

    Develop a rapport with students and create a welcoming and harmonious environment, while providing a positive example for youth

    Set up and prepare program areas and ensure activities run smoothly

    Supervise children attending the program, and promote safety and respect amongst all participants while maintaining order and discipline

    Manage behavior and enforce all rules, guidelines, and safety procedures

    Maintain a clean environment and leave the area in an orderly fashion upon departure

    Assist with recruitment of youth participants and outreach to the community

    Participate as part of a team to run a top-of-the-line Youth Center with quality programs by helping out where needed or instructed

    Qualifications

    Enthusiastic, dynamic personality that inspires and motivates children

    Effective behavior management skills

    Ability to work in a non-judgmental, culturally sensitive, and empowering manner with children from diverse backgrounds

    Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Social Work, or related field

    At least 2 years’ experience working with children and positive youth development program facilitation

    Ability to work independently and be self-directed

    Ability to multi-task, work under stress, and handle stressful situations

    Ability to facilitate art enrichment activities – a plus

    COVID-19 vaccination required, or willingness to get vaccinated, due to interaction with youth
