TECHNICAL WRITER (AVIONICS)
Avionics technical writers author the work instructions and graphics
that technicians use to build and test launch vehicles and spacecraft.
They innovatively propose new ways to work and to accomplish the SpaceX
mission: to colonize Mars. They standardize and document Avionics
processes and workflows and thereby grease the wheels for engineering
and production.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Interact with engineers, subject matter experts, production
personnel, and management to create clear, concise and accurate work
instructions and process documents
- Create effective illustrations to enhance comprehension of written
content
- Develop content in the following environments:
- Microsoft Word and Office
- XML / HTML editing software
- Single-source publishing software
- Component content management system
- Raster- and vector-based graphic editing software
- 3D graphic design software
- Take ownership of the document creation process to advocate for
improvements to our content delivery tools and practices
- Collaboratively implement innovative solutions to enhance
engineering and production‘s access to information
- Creatively participate in special projects: training, graphic
design, web content design, XML editing, component content
management, or workflow development
- Assist with and coordinate the standardization of work instructions
authored among the Avionics technical writers and beyond
- Work with instructions and process documents within version control
software and documentation release systems, in order to preserve and
manage the integrity and configuration of the documentation
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in an engineering, math, science, writing,
English, journalism, marketing, or communications field
- 2 years of experience in planning or technical writing
- 2 years of experience converting and translating engineering
instructions and information into content intended for a variety of
audiences and ability levels
- 2 years of experience using Microsoft products, including Word
- 2 years of experience with creation and editing of 2D graphics, both
raster- and vector-based
- 2 years of experience with Adobe Acrobat
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Technical writing experience in automotive or aviation industries
- Capacity to read and understand technical drawings and schematics
- Experience with creating and editing of 3D graphics, both raster-
and vector-based
- Familiarity with HTML and CSS, exposure to basic coding a plus
- Familiarity with single-source publishing software and component
content management systems
- Ability to work under deadlines and to deliver in the midst of
changes in project direction
- Ability to creatively overhaul and re-design any project or workflow
to optimize comprehension, while meeting requirements
- Ability to communicate and collaborate with diverse co-workers and
personalities in engineering, production, and management; ability to
have insight into their changing needs
- Ability to quickly learn, absorb, and apply technical content to
further develop understanding of electronics assembly and testing
processes
- Strong analytical, project management, computer, communication, and
writing skills (typing, spelling, grammar)
- Familiarity with mechanical processes in a manufacturing environment
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be willing to work extended hours and weekends as needed

including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) you
must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S.,
protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible
to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department
