SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out
exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are
not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this
possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.
LEAD ELECTROMAGNETIC COMPLIANCE ENGINEER
This position entails leading the EMC team that will help design the
satellite broadband network of the future. You will work closely with
the different design teams on pre-design tradeoffs, specifications, and
testing of vehicle and ground components and systems to deliver
regulatory compliant systems.
You will use your deep understanding of electromagnetic environments and
effects to set requirements based on physics rather than industry
standards. You will support engineering management with confidence;
thinking creatively – and questioning the status quo.
If you seek a fast-paced, dynamic environment; if you thrive on solving
difficult, fuzzy problems where resolutions have high impact; if you
love managing through persuasion and if you love the challenge of
building something from scratch, then this position might be your next
career step.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform analysis and design relating to: effects of space plasma,
thruster plume, lightning, surface/bulk/triboelectric charging,
grounding architectures, structural bonding, galvanic isolation,
transfer impedance, shielding effectiveness, effects of
radiated/conducted emissions & susceptibility, near field/far field
electric fields, welding, protection circuits (example: TVS diodes)
and corona
- Design and perform EMI/EMC tests to validate the design and analysis
of the satellite, ground stations, gateways, user terminals and
their subsystems and deliver regulatory compliant systems
- Write EMI requirements, test plans and test reports
- Troubleshoot EMI issues from system to board level
- Generate aggressor/victim matrix to identify EMC risks in the system
design
- Analyze spacecraft magnetic moment and current loop torque
disturbances
- Soft and hard iron magnetic modeling and its interactions with other
spacecraft components
- Schedule and arrange 3rd party EMC test facilities
- Scope, budget and build internal EMC test facilities

- Bachelor of Science Degree in electrical engineering or physics
- 7+ years of work experience in EMI/EMC requirements, design,
analysis, debug and testing
- 4+ years of experience leading an EMI/EMC team
- Previous work experience with two or more of the following: creating
circuit schematics, creating or reviewing PCB layouts, reading
engineering drawings, creating bills of material
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- 10+ years of work experience in EMI/EMC team
- Previous work experience with MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-464,
NASA-STD-4003 documentation
- Advanced Degree in electrical engineering, physics or other similar
technical areas of study
- Knowledge of in-space EMI/EMC effects. This includes: effects of
space plasma, charging, grounding, bonding, shielding, design for
low radiated emissions, lightning, electromagnetic field coupling,
Maxwell's equations, boundary conditions, image charge/current, and
lumped element modeling
- Knowledge of materials and their electrical properties including
paint, anodize, magnaplate, nickel plate, alodine, surface finish,
electrical conductivity, volume resistivity, surface resistance
- Demonstrated experience troubleshooting EMI events from system to
board level
- Demonstrated experience with NASA-HDBK-4001, DO-160, MIL-STD-1541,
SSP 30237, SSP 30238 documentation
- Strong knowledge of RF principles and RF engineering
