Law Lecturer, Legal English Institute (LEI)

Boston, MA

  • Responsibilities

Suffolk University’s Legal English Institute (LEI) for international lawyers invites applications for a law lecturer position.

The LEI is a 3-week intensive course offered exclusively for international lawyers admitted to an LL.M. program at Suffolk or elsewhere. Program participants study the foundations of the American legal system, including the common law; the structure and underlying principles of the U.S. governmental system; the provisions of the U.S. Constitution relevant to LL.M. study; how to read, interpret and brief common law cases, and the like.

Central to the program is instruction in effective legal writing which, because the participants are non-native English speakers, includes the grammar, vocabulary and other skills they will need for their LL.M. studies.

Although the program is entering its 7th year, we continue to incorporate learnings from each year into the following year’s program.  As such, the individual selected for the position will have the opportunity to continue to develop the legal writing curriculum, including selecting appropriate texts.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • MA in TESOL, English, linguistics or similar area of study.
    • Experience in law, such as legal practice, law school coursework, paralegal work, extensive experience teaching English to lawyers, or similar.
    • A minimum of 3 years of teaching experience.

PROGRAM DATES FOR 2018: July 30 – August 17, 2018 (similar period in August in subsequent years if appointment is renewed)

SCHEDULE: Teaching schedule, three late afternoon or evenings a week for 2 ½ hours each session, Mon., Wed, and Thurs. (22.5 class hours total); close collaboration with the law instructor and program director expected (teleconference/emails/texts) and occasional brief meetings with the afternoon law instructor to ensure alignment between the law and legal writing coursework.
