The National Institute for Standards and Technology uses a solenoid to keep their spin filters polarized. Transverse magnetic gradients are causing the spin filter to depolarize faster. I was tasked with measuring very small transverse gradients using Hall Effect Sensors, so that researchers could make adjustments to extend the lifetime of the spin filter.
• Analyzed the noise and drift of Hall Effect Sensors, proving it was possible to measure magnetic gradients down to a few mG/cm.
• Developed a method to efficiently and accurately calibrate Hall Effect Sensors.
• Built a magnetic gradiometer prototype and measured the underlying components of
• magnetic gradients as small as 10 mG/cm.
